Pronounced Niks (after the Greek goddess who rules the night), this handy little make-up range began as a professional line in 1999.
It got gradually taken over by the rest of us, thanks to a shrewd mix of everyday neutrals, high-fashion shades and seriously nifty tools of the trade – all at extremely reasonable prices.
(It’s like a combination of Estee Lauder classics and MAC fashion, but all at Bourjois prices.)
Here are our top ten favourites:
- Pore Filler, £11. Yes, of course it helps hide enlarged pores, but the same silicone technology also glides over fine lines and crepiness to minimise all kinds of textural imperfections for a smoother-looking skin surface. Apply it over your usual moisturiser but before foundation.
- Dark Circle Concealer, £6.50. The first thing you notice is how silky it feels as it melts onto the delicate undereye area – no caking, no dragging. However, its real virtue is its unusual orange tinge which helps colour-correct the purple-blue tones of undereye circles. (Just don’t try using it over normal red pimples).
- Hot Singles Eye Shadow in Sun Glow, £3.50. Older eyelids look best with fairly neutral eyeshadows that provide emphasis and definition, and even a bit of drama, whereas bright colours and very matte or sparkly textures draw attention to lines and crepiness. This mustard hue, which has the merest hint of soft, line-blurring shimmer, not only goes beautifully with one of this season’s top fashion shades, but also works beautifully with any favourite dark browns, greys and charcoals that you might use in the crease or as eyeliner.
- Pro Brush 16, £8.50. The synthetic bristles, which are super-smooth, are perfect for blending eyeshadow, successfully shifting patches of excess pigment whilst simultaneously buffing the powder for a seamless blur of colour. They also feel so soft against your eyelids, it’s like stroking them with silk.
- Angled Eyeliner Pro Brush 11, £8.50, is an applicator with a difference. It might take a practise run or so to adjust to the unusual shape, but if you’ve ever struggled with a handle that blocks your view of seeing what you’re doing, which means you never get a smooth line, this angled design may be the answer. With its tapered tip, it even helps you perfect those eye-lifting outer ‘flicks’, too.
- Micro Brow Pencil, £7. Its ultra-thin pencil tip and dry formulation coats even fine hairs – or fills tiny gaps – while an impressive eight shades means there’s one for every colouring. The Blonde shade has a bit of warmth to it, so cooler colourings may prefer the ashier Taupe alternative, while brunettes who also find many brow make-ups too red will like the Ash Brown. Conversely, there’s a separate Auburn shade for redheads who find most brow make-up too ashy and dull.
- Ombre Blush, £8. Don’t be intimidated by the name – it simply puts two lighter/darker tones in one pan, then blends them together. Check out the Soft Flush colourway, a natural-looking coral-pink that adds a just-run-around-the-park glow to the cheeks, no matter what colouring you have.
- Butter Lipsticks, £5.50, are luxuriously satiny and hydrating yet deposit more colour on your lips than many glosses. With 24 shades to choose from, the peachy-coral Easy Livin gives a warm lift that complements a low-key, daytime look, while Ripe Berry is a more dramatic, autumnal, trend-led effect that looks great with both neutral and smoky eye make-ups.
- Dewy Finish Setting Spray, £7, like all setting sprays, helps your make-up to last longer. But while the Matte version controls shine-prone skins, the Dewy variant adds a soft, healthy, naturally fresh-skinned look to dry-looking complexions and arid-looking powders – and no, it won’t leave your skin looking wet or glossy.
- Matte Blotting Paper, £3.50 for 50 sheets. When your T-zone turns a bit shiny but you don’t want to cake on the face powder, these tiny tissues are your secret weapon. Just pat them gently onto a greasy nose or any oily-looking patch and they’ll absorb surface grease to leave your face looking naturally matte, but not caked or dry. Tip: A perfect time to use them is just before someone starts taking selfies.
