No offence to Frodo and co., but there are few things as unsightly as hobbit feet – gnarly, cracked, peeling, and flaky, with thick, discoloured toenails… bleuch! Fortunately, medical issues aside, you can rapidly transform hardened hooves into baby soft tootsies that you can flash with flair.
1) Tackle thick hard skin with Footner Exfoliating Socks, £19.99. No filing, scraping or grating required. Just wear them for 60 minutes, preferably after a quick pre-soak to speed up the process, then wash off. Three days later the AHA-based exfoliating action is visibly peeling off dead and hardened skin, although it can take up to seven days to complete the process.
2) Maintain the softening process by using Bare Foot Peppermint + Plum Foot Scrub, £4.25, in the shower every week, and a conditioning lotion daily. Even hand cream will do, although Ruby Red Cooling Foot Cream, £20, contains perfect botanicals, including peppermint essential oil, shea butter and healing vitamin E, for a deliciously luxurious, foot-reviving, anti-inflammatory, heel-softening pick-me-up.
3) Go easy on any nail buffing since fungal infections can enter via the tiny cracks and fissures it can cause in the nail surface. They may then become thick, discoloured, cracked and crumbly. Michael Harrison Blount, Lecturer in Podiatry at the University of Salford, says, “If you develop signs of a fungal nail, start treatment immediately. During the treatment phase it’s essential not to wear nail colour as the varnish creates a barrier over the nail and treatment cannot penetrate to the layers below.” Try Scholl Fungal Nail Treatment, £19.40, or Nailner, £19.99, which claims to eradicate even 40-year old fungal nail infections in 12 weeks.
4) Pretty up healthy toenails with Maybelline Dr Rescue Base Coat CC Nails, £2.99, which conceals, whitens and brightens. It can also be used alone as well as under colour.
5) Prefer bold polish? Check out Barry M’s timely Wimbledon Nail Art ideas, using colours such as their yellow Speedy Nail Paint in On Your Marks, £3.99 for the tennis ball, or Gelly Nail Paint in Key Lime, £2.95, for the court, decorated with the brand’s Nail Art Pens in Black and White, £4.99 each . Finish with top coat and you can (ahem) put your best foot forward…
