We know we’re forever encouraging you to be on trend and now, here we are talking about comfort; so should comfort or fashion be the priority?
The answer is, wherever possible, combining fashion and comfort. And this is where Ath-Leisure or Sports Luxe is perfect.
We apologise for possibly being confusing by talking about two trends at the same time. This is because the industry calls the trend Ath-Leisure (athletic clothing worn for leisure) while in most fashion articles, it is called Sports Luxe (sports clothing worn for leisure).
It can involve skimpy bits of Lycra and pastel trainers with oversized bows, making this a trend which could go tragically wrong for the 50-plus woman. So here is a guide to how to “do” Ath-Leisure/Sports Luxe and look sensational.
Our first piece of advice is to mainly seek out pieces which have evolved from this trend, in terms of colour and fit. If you normally wear colour, you will still wish to choose colour, but we would suggest exercising (excuse the pun!) caution with fluorescent colours. So if you like green, wear green, just not fluorescent lime, etc…
When choosing a top to pair with yoga pants, joggers or any voluminous trousers, ideally add a slim top to avoid looking wide all the way down. If you are a slim “straight” with a small bust, you can wear a fairly skinny-fitting top; but if you have a fuller bust, consider choosing a top that is narrow but not tight. And ideally tuck in your top to create a defined waistline.
Footwear is a key area when styling Ath-Leisure/Sports Luxe: it’s best to style sport-inspired pants with plimsolls, trainers or any flat or block-heel sandals; mid tones (such as tan or snake-print) and metallics look good. Definitely avoid trainers in nursery colours or with big bows as well as boots, court shoes, or any formal footwear.
Remember ath-leisure is about looking chic in a relaxed and casual way.
There are other elements to keep in mind, when styling Ath-Leisure/Sports Luxe: you could throw either a parka or a blazer over sporty pants. Make it a parka if you are heading out for a flat-white with the girls; but make it a blazer if you are going on a hot date.
Statement jewellery worn with low-key casual pieces is very much a thing right now, so if you feel like adding a statement necklace or statement earrings, go for it!
Basically any large tote or cross-body or clutch bag – indeed, anything except a ladylike grab bag (the kind The Queen wears) works here. For daytime choose a large tote or cross-body bag; and a clutch or more delicate cross-body bag for evenings.
Are you going to try the ath-leisure look?
