We don’t know about you, but we were totally annoyed by Black Friday. It is one American import the Americans can have back.
Black Friday and its companion Cyber-Monday are a retail phenomenon resulting from Thanksgiving, the American holiday that is bigger than Christmas. Yes, bigger than Christmas. And because Thanksgiving is bigger than Christmas, Black Friday and Cyber-Monday are the US equivalent to our January Sales.
Though why UK retailers think we want the equivalent to the January Sales in the run-up to Christmas is anybody’s guess. Except that the end of November, which is when Thanksgiving falls, neatly coincides with the peak of Christmas-shopping frenzy. So, we think UK retailers believe they can tempt us to buy even more if we are told it is a Black Friday or a Cyber-Monday bargain.
We have to confess that in 2015, SoSensational got caught up in Black Friday and Cyber-Monday frenzy but no longer; we have seen sense; you savvy 50-plus women, mature ladies, don’t want to be bombarded with all these bossy, shouty emails telling you to buy more, more, more!
One of our favourite fashion brands, Jigsaw ignored Black Friday – and we applaud them for it.
Jigsaw is the brand where Designer meets High Street. Jigsaw has an edgy and distinctly designer vibe that we really admire and which truly works for 50-plus fashionable women. Jigsaw use premium fabrics to create elegant silhouettes and uncluttered lines that add up to a great deal more than the sum of their parts.
Here are six of our very favourite pieces from Jigsaw:
We simply adore this elegant dress crafted in lace with a slight stretch for a body-slimming silhouette and a comfortable fit. Wear a bangle or a cuff to show off the on-trend, three-quarter length sleeves; then just add court shoes and a slim clutch for party-time perfection.
And because there is life away from the party-season, here is a stunning dress to wear for everyday. Made from wool and viscose with a touch of elastane to for stretch, this dress is perfect for the office and smart-casual evenings. The body is seam-free thanks to an expensive technique, while the skirt is in Milano stitch for a slightly heavier handle and a flattering fit. We love the uncluttered, coolly elegant boat neck and batwing sleeves. Pair it with heels for going out or with boots for work.
With a row of mother-of-pearl buttons fastening it down the back, this is the perfect jumper. A viscose-lambswool blend with a touch of cashmere, making it breathable yet warm, it has a wide round neck and batwing sleeves to give it slouchy perfection. Team it with your favourite jeans for laid-back weekends, or with a midi-skirt for dinner out or parties. For an on-point mid-century vibe, pull those sleeves up to the elbow and add a bangle or cuff.
This wrap-over midi skirt is made from heavy silk crêpe de chine, which has been screen-printed and washed to give a soft drape. It has concealed zip and darts for a flattering fit over the hips. Pair it with an oversized jumper and boots now, and style it in spring with a camisole and a tailored jacket or cardigan.
Jigsaw’s ‘London Fit’ jacket is a perennial favourite. It has been updated for Autumn/Winter in an Italian wool mix. As always, their design team has focused on details, including a contrast under-collar, notch lapels and flap pockets. It can be paired with matching London Fit Trousers to create a stunning Trouser Suit, or mixed with other separates.
We all love this slim fit, midi skirt in buttery soft leather. An elegant investment piece, it can fit into both our workwear and our going-out wardrobes. Flatteringly cut to sit just below the waist, it also has darts to create a flattering silhouette. Pair with lightweight knitwear or crisp shirt.
And if you love accessories, we’re sure you’ll love these…
So, were you annoyed by Black Friday and Cyber-Monday? If so, do please tell us why…

I make a point of not even going out on those days. I don’t want to be involved at all. The Americans can keep them.
Many thanks for letting us know what you do on Black Friday and Cyber Monday! Like Jigsaw, we now ignore it too. It used to be hassle and stress for the whole team; now we keep things on an even keel in the office – much better!!
