Being on holiday usually means that the quickest, most pleasant way to cool off in the heat is in the pool – or perhaps in an air-conditioned bar with a chilled cocktail.
But sometimes you need other ways to ‘chill out’…
- Forget cold showers. Yes, they cool the skin briefly, but closing the pores actually preserves body heat. It’s better to soak in a tepid bath (75o-85oF, 24o-29oC) for 15-20 minutes to allow your circulation to gradually release all its heat into the water. You’ll then remain cool and comfortable for hours.
- Spray your skin with a cooling mist, then sit by a fan to take the heat out of the day., especially before sleep. Avene Eau Thermale spring water spray, £10 for 300ml, contains unique microflora that have exceptional anti-inflammatory, cooling benefits to hot skin, which I can vouch for, while Magicool Hot Weather Cooler, £4.88 for 200ml, is miraculously chilled in the can but comes out as as a fine mist, (so it won’t feel like the Ice Bucket Challenge).
- Splash pulse points at the wrist, inner elbows, even neck and temples, with cold water for an emergency refresher.
- Cool your feet. The high surface area and all those superficial blood vessels can be used to cool you quicker. Try a barely-tepid foot bath, a blast of refreshing foot spray or even a chilly compress like a couple cold, damp hand towels. Alternatively, rub Nelsons Arnicare Arnica Cooling Gel, £5.59, into hot feet and legs. its combination of soothing arnica with zingy grapefruit and menthol will help you feel more comfortable.
- Try alcohol, although not the drinking kind (not that we’re the type to tell you to step away from that G&T!) Spray toners create a refreshing effect by evaporating quickly off the skin. Choose gentle formulations such as Trilogy Hydrating Mist Toner with Moroccan rosewater, lavender and geranium, £18.50 for 100ml, or B.Confident Hyaluronic Acid Sprit, £3.95, which is also beautifully hydrating, thanks to the hyaluronic acid). Spray it over the face, neck and cleavage.
- Soothe hot irritated eyes with Origins No Puffery Cooling Roll-On for Puffy Eyes, £25 for 15ml, with its cold metal rollerball, or Soap & Glory Eyes Cool, £6,50, a mask with gel inserts that can be kept in the fridge.
- Finally, don’t forget deodorant. While anti-perspirant deodorants such as Soft & Gentle 48hr Protection, £2, keep you both dry and fragrant, ‘natural’ fans may prefer PitROK Crystal Natural Deodorant Stick, £6.59, which deposits a layer of minerals over the skin. Although it won’t stop wetness, it prevents the bacteria build-up that causes BO, plus, being fragrance-free, you’ll never smell of hot, sickly-sweet anti-perspirant again.
