It’s always good to have expert opinion. Here are the top concealer tips that the professionals use to make clients look flawless, so they work wonders!
Check out what our favourite make-up artists revealed:
1. Celebrity makeup & hair designer, Alyn Waterman: “As the skin ages, the undereye area becomes darker and loses elasticity, so always choose a lightweight, light-reflecting concealer for that area. Make sure it’s creamy and hydrating rather than dry and powdery which emphasises lines. Lower your chin and apply it exactly where you see any dark circles. If your concealer is lightweight, you can also use it as a base under eyeshadow, but only in small amounts as too much can emphasise wrinkles.”
2. Oscar-nominated MUA Tina Earnshaw: “One of my favourite concealers is YSL’s Touche Eclat, £25, which is very soft and delicate, but for older skins Shu Uemura Poreraser, £29, is my wonderful new find. It gives the most amazing glow. I’m so excited with it that I used it recently on actress Katherine Waterson. As it’s an under-base mousse, it’s very easy to apply, and a little goes along way.”
3. Armand Beasley, MUA & beauty presenter: “I recommend MAC Pro Longwear Concealer, £18 – the key to using it is blend, blend, blend but, boy, does it cover! Great for hiding dark circles and any blemishes, it’s especially good on pigmentation, but remember to use translucent setting powder to fix it in place.”
4. Gina Baden, international MUA and beauty coach: “Mix your eye cream with concealer as the extra moisture will keep the eye area fresh. Massaging it from under the outer corners in an upwards motion is also a great way to plump and brighten the skin.”
5. Adam Burrell, celebrity MUA and brand ambassador for Barry M: “My main advice is to make sure you’re light-handed and keep your concealer sheer so that it looks as natural as possible. Apply it to the deepest, darkest under eye area just by the nose, then lightly dab it along the under eye, moving outwards. Barry M Flawless Concealer, £4.49 is perfect for mature skin as it’s infused with aloe and cucumber extracts to hydrate, while its light-reflecting properties instantly add a wide-awake, fresh-faced look.”
6. MUA to the A-list, Ariane Poole: “Many people apply under eye concealer too close to the lashes, leaving the actual trough, where the shadow is, and which extends almost to the cheekbone, without proper illumination, so I apply mineral-based, light-reflecting concealer pens in downward radiating ‘sun-shine’ stripes. Blend it with a tapping motion of the middle finger, which also helps drain any puffiness. If your dark shadows are really dark, don’t go lighter – go peachy in colour. It counteracts the blueness and won’t look ashy.”
7. Leading MUA and natural beauty coach, Lina Cameron: “A good tip is to apply under eye concealer in a triangle shape from the inner eye down to the top of the cheek and up to the outer eye. Smooth the product within the triangle to create light and even out the skin. This also prevents a panda eye effect. I love Guerlain Multi-Perfecting Concealer Hydrating Blurring Effect, £25 which comes in six different tones. For the most perfect result, I always mix two shades.”
8. Lisa Potter-Dixon. Head MUA for Benefit Cosmetics: “When you have a cold we often have high colour on our cheeks and around our nose. Use a yellow colour corrector, such as Benefit Lemon Aid Primer, £16.50, under your foundation to knock back any redness. Pat it on with your finger to ensure long wear.”
9. Award-winning, international MUA Louise Constad: “When applying concealer under the eyes, make sure you add it to the inner corners, extending it to the adjacent area beside the nose. This corner gets darker as we age, so adding light has a de-ageing effect. It also widens the space between your eyes and stops your eyes from looking to close together. Add it to the outer corners as well. Because the eye area sinks with age, adding light helps lift out the entire area.”
10. Louise adds: “Draw on a concealer that’s a bit lighter than your foundation above the upper lip. It makes it look fuller so you won’t need filler injections! It also helps prevent lipstick from bleeding by acting as a barrier. Use it under your eyebrow, too, as the greater colour contrast not only makes your eyebrows show up more but provides the illusion of more space between eyelid and brow, so you look younger and fresher.”
