In the 21st century, for a whole slew of reasons, more and more women are remarrying or marrying for the first time when they are aged over 40.
If you are marrying for the first time, or remarrying, and are at an age where a big frothy frock is not the most appropriate garment in which to walk down the aisle or up the steps of the registry office, SoSensational understands the issues and has a wide range of wedding dresses for older brides to choose from.
If you are a more mature bride, when it comes to your outfit, you will want something that will make you feel gorgeous, glamorous and special, but you probably do not crave the same type of gown you might have worn if you were walking up the aisle at age 30.
There are so many options and permutations of ceremony and celebration that second-time-around brides and older brides may finish up requiring several outfits plus accompanying accessories. So let’s look at the options:
One popular option for second-time-around bride seems to be having a ceremony for very close family – possibly followed by a lunch – followed by a party on another day for wider family and friends.
If you are having a registry office marriage ceremony (or its low-key equivalent in a church, mosque, mandir or synagogue), you will probably want to wear an outfit that is chic, formal and short (by which we mean on, or just above, the knee) – a dress-and-jacket, perhaps, or a dress-and-coat or a long-sleeve dress.
Older, first-time brides may still want a big, glamorous “do”, but not necessarily the Big Meringue-style dress. Brands such as Monsoon and Coast these days have beautiful, short wedding gowns as well as very pretty cocktail and evening wear in appropriately pale shades, while brands such as Jacques Vert and Phase Eight always feature lots of long gowns in pale colours in their collections.
For any party, whether it takes place immediately after the ceremony or some time after, you may want something more party-like –a full-on cocktail or evening frock, perhaps, or maybe a maxi skirt or palazzo trousers plus a fabulous top.
Then there is that other popular option for second-time around or older brides, the beach wedding somewhere warm and possibly exotic. A full-on cocktail or evening frock may feel a little overdressed for a beach wedding, but a maxi skirt or palazzo trousers plus a fabulous top or a not-too-elaborate maxi dress, would all work well for this type of celebration.
When it comes to accessories, remember that both gold and silver are effectively neutral, so you could choose gold shoes/sandals and gold clutch or silver shoes/sandals plus silver clutch and wear with more than one outfit.
If you are having a beach wedding, flat jewelled sandals will not only look pretty, but will be far more practical on sand or decking.
If your celebration is taking place in summer with outdoor lawns and you have bought shoes with a stiletto or other thin heel, do invest in some ‘Heel Stoppers’ from cleanheels.co.uk. They are quite inexpensive and will stop your heels sinking into the grass. You could even buy a multipack and hand them out to your similarly shod friends.
Clutch bags remain on trend and very elegant for dressier occasions, but do remember that as Bride, you will shake a lot of hands so a clutch with a strap, allowing you to hang your bag on your shoulder, when required, will be very helpful.
A hat or headdress of some kind is more about a fashion statement these days, though a head-covering may be required for some religious marriage ceremonies.
Even if you are not required to wear a hat for religious reasons, you may still wish to do so.
When choosing a hat, remember, you will be required to do a lot of kissing, so a big brim should be a no-no unless it is a very floppy brim. Also remember you don’t want a brim to cast a shadow on your face in the photographs. A fascinator or a hat with no brim, or an upturned brim, will be ideal.
Keep jewellery such as dangly earrings or a statement necklace to put on AFTER you remove your hat.
If you are not confident about make-up, visit a department store, where the assistants on the make-up counters can often help, or use a visiting make-up artist. Or view this video for some ideas.
We know you want to look your best on this special day, but remember your husband-to-be has chosen to marry YOU because of who you are, and not because you know how to apply blusher!
