Is it an age thing? Or a shape thing? We ask because we are trying to understand why we love a skirt so much at SoSensational.
Actually, we think it’s just a skirt thing, because while Jan and Cyndy love a skirt, so do key members of the SoSensational team who are many decades younger than Jan and Cyndy.
And aren’t we all just loving this season’s sensational skirts, which happily seem to be perfect for the 50-plus woman because they are loooong. Not necessarily maxi, though there are lots of gorgeous maxis around, but midi or at least finishing well over the knee.
Yes, the midi skirt is super on-trend for the S/S16 season. Mostly, the midis are genuine midis, properly hitting mid-calf (at least on real women who are rarely quite as tall as models), and sometimes the midi is a knee-length skirt with an extra inch or so on the hem so that it doesn’t ride up into a mini as you walk or when you sit down – an attribute which we also love.
While we are on the subject of skirt lengths and before we show you all the delicious and irresistible skirt styles for S/S16, we want to share a piece of insider fashion knowledge with you: if in height, you are in the taller range (i.e. you are 5’-6½”, 5’-7” or 5’-7½ ”), which is tall but not Officially Tall as far as most Tall ranges including Dorothy Perkins, New Look or Long, Tall Sally, is concerned, you might still want to consider buying knee-length skirts from the Tall ranges to ensure the knee-length skirt is long enough for your height.
Lace and print (especially placement print) are both very strong for S/S16. A lace skirt is much more versatile than you might initially imagine. For daytime, pair a lace skirt with a plain blazer, a plain tee and plimsolls, flat gladiator sandals or chunky-heel mules. Then for evenings, glam it up with a sheer blouse or a silky top and jewels and, depending on how glam you need/want to be, you could add jewelled sandals and a jewelled clutch.
As well as being super on-trend, a print or placement-print midi is also very versatile. Again, you might consider teaming it for day with a plain tee plus blazer or biker jacket, plimsolls and tote. Then for evenings and holidays, pair it with a simple silky tee or top, and a pair of pretty sandals and you will be super cool (in both senses).
A maxi skirt, particularly one in, say monochrome or navy or a dark-ground print, is also a versatile piece for S/S 16. As with the midi, pair it with a dark tee plus blazer or biker for day, with plimsolls and a tote. For holidays add a plain tee and sandals, and for evenings just add a glammier tee, plus some bold jewellery.
Of course, one of the most on-trend skirts for S/S16 is the fine or knife-pleated skirt. Just take a look at our How to wear pleats blog for how-to-wear advice, style tips and perfect pleated skirts.
