If you’ve have had a mastectomy, we truly sympathise.
We can’t begin to imagine what a massive impact this has had on you emotionally as well as physically.
Jan and Cyndy appreciate that it could be tempting to skirt around fashion entirely and just choose clothes which cover you from neck to knees; but they won’t be clothes which make you feel good. They also recognise that fashion will be harder for you if you have had breast surgery but not impossible! And to prove it here is great fashion whether you’ve had a single or double mastectomy.
We are assuming that you have got your post-surgery bras and prosthesis sorted. If not, do take a look at the lingerie ranges at Debenhams, John Lewis and Marks & Spencer.
Debenhams and Marks & Spencer also offer post-surgery swimwear, so do take a look.
Once bras are sorted, necklines seem to cause the most fashion issues for women who have had surgery for breast cancer.
Very low necklines are clearly out. Or are they? A very low neckline on, say, an evening gown, could be a problem but for everything else (as they say at Mastercard) there are little vests with straight-across necklines.
The straight-across neckline is the key, because if a vest has a straight-across neckline, it will sit beautifully under a U-neckline, a scoop neckline or a V-neckline. A vest with a straight-across neckline, will also work well under a wrap-front dress, under a shirt, beneath a jacket or under a sheer blouse.
If you only buy one vest top, buy it in a nude tone that will blend with lots in your wardrobe. If you are now thinking of resurrecting items from your wardrobe that you believed you would never wear again, buy vest tops in colours that will match with clothes you own – be tempted by all these gorgeous colours.
If you are a woman who is post-surgery and on the hunt for a party dress or a post-surgery occasion dress, your overall body-shape should still determine what you choose.
If you are slim with a “straight” shape to waist and hips do look for firm fabric or fabric which falls away from the body (such as silk) rather than fabric which clings. A higher neckline may also work well for you
If you are curvier, with a small waist and defined hips, a dress with a waistband or with shaping at the waist, and in a fabric which moulds to your body, will work well. And do keep in mind that if you were curvy before, you are still curvy – but with different curves! So rock those curves!
If you want confirmation of how much the right clothes can help you after surgery, do take a look at this video featuring Glenys who had breast cancer and then starred in a video for SoSensational.
One word on colour… colour in our view is always important but if you are not in the strongest emotional state it’s more important than ever because a colour which makes you feel good when you put it on (and that’s true whether that colour is slinky black, fabulous fuchsia or outrageous orange), will instantly make you feel better…
And one final word: a gorgeous piece of statement jewellery, a great blow-dry and a bit of slap will all make you look better and lift your spirits – just ask Glenys. We know it can be hard to muster the enthusiasm or the energy for all of this, but it creates a virtuous spiral – when you look better, you feel happier, and when you feel happier your spirit lifts because endorphins are released and then you feel even better…
