This is the season, lovely SoSensational ladies, which sees the Midi Skirt make its big comeback.
On the fashion pages and in the glossy magazines, they have been wittering on about midi skirts for a number of seasons.
And, of course, the Early Adopters (that’s fashion-industry language for the tiny minority of women – or men – who are the first to get in to a trend) have been wearing them for a few seasons, now.
But out in the real world, A/W-16 is the moment when the mid-calf skirt rules the fashion world. Or perhaps it is the moment when the mid-calf skirt again rules the fashion world. Because, if you are anything like Jan and Cyndy, you will probably remember midi skirts or mid-calf skirts from the late 1960s and perhaps also from the 1980s when this skirt-length returned briefly.
The really great thing about the midi skirt or mid-calf skirt is that it is a brilliant fashion trend for women aged 50 or over because a below-the-knee looks properly grown up.
Actually, that’s just one of the really great things about the midi skirt. The others are that midi skirts are available in loads of different shapes and cuts (pleated, pencil, skater and more) so there is one that is perfect for every height and body shape… And if you buy a midi in a fabric such as a dark-wash denim, it is really versatile, and can be worn now (for late summer) possibly with bare legs, and in A/W with thick tights.
Another excellent thing about the midi skirt is that it allows you to play with proportions. This is really useful if you are tall, petite or imperfectly proportioned. A majority of people are, irrespective of height or weight. A mid-calf skirt also works well for layering – for example, by pairing with a long top, shirt or jumper, and adding a short jacket.
A mid-calf skirt in a luxe fabric is also a clever and grown-up option for party-wear; it can be teamed with a simple tee you may already own, plus gorgeous shoes and jewellery. For even greater versatility, a leather midi skirt paired with a lace or embellished top offers yet more party options.
And more good news: midi skirts mean happy feet! To be perfectly on-trend, a midi skirt should be worn with flats. Notably brogues, ghillies, trainers or ankle boots.
