If you have spent much of your adult life believing a denim skirt to be primarily a summer garment, we are here to disabuse you of that idea.
A denim skirt is, in fact, the absolutely perfect transitional piece and part of the whole 70s trend which continues for A/W15. A denim skirt is the item in your wardrobe you will find you cannot live without throughout September, October and early November. And when it gets seriously cold, you simply put your denim skirt at the back of your closet, to wear again as soon as the first days of spring arrive.
If you are a canny shopper, you may find a few summer-season denim skirts discounted in the sales. If you take that route, do buy a classic, blue- or dark-wash denim as that won’t look too summery – ignore the very pale washes, white or pastel hues that may be in the Sales.
If you fancy splashing out on one of the many uber-glam new season skirts, we have tracked down lots of gorgeous versions, in knee length, midi and even maxi. And there are plenty of great shapes, from pencil to A-line, so you can find the denim skirt which works for your body. Another important attribute, is that denim is kind of neutral, so teams perfectly with virtually any colour and most other fabrics, including (for A/W wool, leather and suede).
A-line…
Pencil…
Midi…
The key to transitional denim is to pair your skirt with thick tights (cream or white early in the season; black or brown as the season progresses and it becomes more autumnal) and chunky-heel ankle boots, or even high boots – but also the chunky-heel kind, nothing too polished; the look you are aiming for is a little bit Boho; a lot 70s.
If, in the UK or elsewhere, September is very warm, team your denim skirt with a white tee plus a jacket or cardi and (absolutely vital) a long scarf wrapped around your neck with ends dangling (preferably a skinny scarf in a floral print, but any long scarf will do).
As the temperatures get cooler, switch the white tee for a bit of cashmere and a leather jacket; denim looks perfect with leather.
Autumn wardrobe sorted, and all with one simple denim skirt…
