We all love a bargain don’t we?
You don’t have to answer, but speaking for ourselves, we definitely love a bargain.
By ‘a bargain’, we mean fabulous fashion with a tiny price tag AKA affordable fashion. We mean buying something that’s right on trend that everyone will think cost a fortune (and make our friends a teeny bit envious), but that actually cost very little!
It’s perfectly possible to look super elegant and on-trend in affordable fashion. But there are tricks:
- Try to avoid anything that could look ‘skimpy.’ If necessary, consider buying a size larger than you normally wear to ensure the piece hangs well and doesn’t pull across the bust (or anywhere else). By the way, oversized pieces – which, as we feel sure you know, are very on-trend this season – definitely look pricier.
- The other trick to buying at very low prices is choosing the right colours. An inexpensive item often looks pricier in a neutral or classic colour. However, if you love the season’s hot shade, go for it…
- Another way to look as if you are wearing premium brands when you’re not is by teaming your “bargains” with pricier pieces or luxe accessories that you may already own.
- Structure is useful in making inexpensive pieces look pricier. The best way to create structure is with good lingerie. A well-fitting bra will provide good support while shape-wear, such as a bodysuit, control-pants or a shaper slip, not only holds us in and helps us look trimmer, but helps to make clothing hang better and thus look more expensive.
Here are some of our favourite pieces across the affordable fashion ranges. The featured brands offer great fashion at very affordable prices and are brands we know you fashion-savvy women love.
DRESSES
As you know, all the season’s hottest dresses have sleeves, which is good news for those of us who prefer to keep our arms covered. As you also know, the season’s hottest dresses are often crafted in print, including animal markings, ditsy florals and oversized blooms.
We especially love these floral-print frocks, which we can wear for work styled with a blazer and brogues, boots or loafers.
We can also wear both dresses for off-duty and weekends styled with trainers or flat boots. They would also take us for a dinner-date styled with heels, bold jewellery and an adorable little bag.
SKIRTS
The season’s best skirts are midi-length. A midi-length pleated skirt is a wonderful workwear option paired with flat boots and a blazer or an oversized knit. But it can also be party-perfect styled with glittery pumps and a party handbag. We also love the season’s new midi pencil (or wiggle) skirt. It, too, works for workwear with a crisp shirt and maybe a blazer. It can be transformed into a ‘wow’ going-out piece with an off-the-shoulder jumper, dark tights and heels.
JUMPERS & TOPS
Jumpers not only keep us warm but – with tops – are the building blocks of a winter wardrobe. Sometimes, however, we want a jumper or top that is more than a basic. We want something “wow” to give our wardrobe an instant boost. And here is the jumper and here is the top to do that…
PARTYWEAR
You may expect fabulous party pieces to come with a bigger price tag, but we’ve truffled out these two brilliant pieces that fall firmly into the category of affordable fashion. The wide-leg jumpsuit in black not only looks bang on trend but is the perfect alternative to an LBD. That embellished blazer could be worn over the top of the jumpsuit if you don’t want to show your arms, or could boost the glamour-quotient of any LBD or party separates.

COATS & JACKETS
Coats and jackets sometimes tell their price. But not this pair of beautiful, affordable coats.
The grey check tailored coat is smart enough for workwear but teamed with jeans and a block-colour scarf, is perfect for weekends and off-duty wear, too.
One of us (the one with a penchant for orange) especially loves the easy-on-the-eye orange bouclé coat. It’s a ‘natural’ to throw on over jeans for lunch with friends, but could be easily worn over tailoring or a dress for the office.
