Phew! Who knew a woman of 59 wearing a bikini (and on holiday in Greece, too, NOT wearing a bikini to sashay down Bond Street) could cause such a media storm…
But when Alex Shulman, 59, the former editor of British Vogue, posted a picture of herself on Instagram wearing a bikini (a mix-and-match one from Boden) the world (well, the media) went crazy.
The photo couldn’t have caused much more of a storm if the ex-Vogue editor had, as we said recently in a different context (in our Style Steal on Mexican actress, Salma Hayek), Instagrammed a shot of herself hanging upside down clad in a Dracula cloak.
Some of the comments were not especially complimentary to Shulman. But what really annoyed us was once again, the tone of surprise across most media that a woman, whether she is an actress, a model, an ex-editor or simply a “regular” woman, does not fall apart after her 50th birthday.
The coverage has included some discussion about a bikini versus a one-piece, but that wasn’t the main point. The main thrust was the general “shock” that a woman over 50 was not only prepared to reveal her body in a bikini (similar shockwaves were felt almost a decade ago when Helen Mirren was snapped in that red bikini) but was also prepared to post her photo on Instagram!
It seems, however, that by sharing her “bikini” shot on Instagram, Shulman is more typical of the over-50 generation than we might imagine. A survey on body confidence conducted among 1,300 women by fashion brand M&Co, revealed that more than half of women aged over 65 (51%) said they were relaxed about showing their body in a bikini. The survey found that those of us with more candles on our cake, have “more important life concerns” than obtaining the dream bikini body!
Do you wear a bikini? We’d love to know! Do send us a photo if you’d like to…
