In the latest in our ongoing series of Celebrity Style Steal, we are looking at the style of Alexandra Shulman, AKA Alex Shulman, 57, editor-in-chief of British Vogue.
One of the really interesting things about Alex Shulman, apart from the fact that she is very clever, is that for the editor of the UK fashion bible, she is a bit meh about fashion when it comes to herself.
Let us explain before you get the impression we are stealing the style of someone who has none; she surely does have style and in abundance. But it’s just not the cookie-cutter, glossy-magazine style which is all about labels, labels, labels. Nor is she obsessive about fashion.
Furthermore, in the interests of making all real women feel better about themselves, Ms Shulman is not thiiin. (That is, she is not protruding-bones, gaunt-face thin). Neither is she fat (a word which has largely vanished from our vocabulary and good riddance!). She is normal. That means she probably eats more than the odd lettuce leaf. And on Planet Fashion that is something of an achievement!
We have chosen these two pictures of her because they perfectly illustrate how fashion done correctly makes us look (a) younger and (b) properly in focus.
In the greeny-print shift dress-and-cardi, she looks perfectly nice. But the high neckline makes her look bigger in the bust and, let’s be honest here, it’s seriously off-trend and all a bit mumsy – a bit let’s wear clothes rather than “let’s do fashion.”.
Steal her style (on the right) by making a trend (in this case the midi-skirt) really work for you. She looks amazing in that embellished midi-skirt. Note, too, that toning (NB toning, not matching) top with its lower neckline; lower necklines (not low low, just lower or scooped out) are more flattering if you are fuller in the bust. We also love the trophy jacket draped round the shoulders and the perfect finishing touches – the necklace (visible but not trying to compete with the statement skirt); and the mid-heel courts in nude/neutral so that there’s no dark colour to make her feet pop (thus “shortening” the legs).
