Angela Rippon, 71, is yet another OBE to feature in a SoSensational Style Steal.
Born in October 1944, Angela Rippon is best known as a newsreader on BBC One’s then flagship bulletin, the Nine O’Clock News.
She is also an author (she has written 14 books) and a presenter, presenting the first two series of Top Gear and Come Dancing.
Apart from her role as a serious TV journalist, she is probably best remembered for her stonking appearance on the Morecambe and Wise Christmas Show in 1976. Jan and Cyndy certainly remember it; do let us know if you do, too.
She is still a regular face on the BBC, as a co-presenter of the consumer show Rip Off Britain; as a co-host of Holiday Hit Squad, and most recently as a “brain-box” “helper” on BBC Two’s new quiz show, Debateable.
Jan always had the impression that in her news-anchor prime, Angela Rippon was more about substance than appearance. Jan felt the very able broadcaster used the helmet hair, the fierce brows and the stiff tailoring as a form of defence in a sexist world of broadcasting, then still dominated by men…
These days, Angela Rippon has developed a style which is a bit softer and has more edge and we approve. For her appearance on Debateable, she wore leather trousers which suit her long, still-slender legs (the ones she got out for the nation for that Morecambe and Wise Christmas Show).
We love the way Angela has put together these black party separates. Steal her style by looking a bit edgy and employing some clever little tricks such as showing some bare flesh at the neck (but not too much), in order to avoid wearing black close to the face because black close to the face can be ageing.
Also, she has chosen a lace top in black. That is also a clever move. Because lace is not a solid fabric and allows light through, it is particularly flattering close to the face, accounting for its perennial appeal.
She has paired those black separates with a chain-strap bag and point-toe black court shoes. Her shoes have a low heel which works for her because she is quite tall. For those of us blessed with less height, a mid-heel or even a high-heel black court would also work well with that uber-glam sequin skirt. Black sheer tights add to the illusion of height, so another good trick to look taller and slimmer.
We love that oriental-inspired red jacket. We think Angela likes to wear (or is advised to wear) outfits which show off her great legs, so she has paired the jacket with a pencil skirt. We would have styled it with black skinny jeans or slim-cut trousers and a very basic black top… Shibumi offer lots of similarly covetable, orient-inspired jackets (and coats) in silk and cashmere, in masses of colours and in both prints and plains.
Which of Angela’s outfits do you prefer – the black or red?

PM is always business-like groomed in a very down to earth way which is more approachable to the ordinary voting public. Would imagine she would “scrub- up” well tho when the occasion demands.
Hi Greta, many thanks for commenting. It will certainly be interesting to watch Theresa May’s style as time goes on…
where can I buy the jacket Angela wore on health true or scare on 25 04 17
Hi there Linda, Look out for an email from SoSensational with some yellow jackets that you could buy. We don’t know exactly where Angela Rippon bought her jacket and, of course, it could be a wardrobe favourite so not currently available, but if you check out the ones in our email to you, you may find a yellow jacket to love. By the way, because our email has links, do check your ‘Junk’ folder.
I prefare the black outfit
