Ascot may be over for another year, but if you are going to a wedding – especially if you are Mother of the Bride or Mother of the Groom – getting your millinery right and avoiding hat hair is top of the agenda when it comes to planning your look for the wedding.
UK-based celebrity hair stylist Asgar Saboo gives his expert take on avoiding the dreaded hat hair and gives a rundown on how to style different hair types when wearing a hat.
Straight Hair
A look previously favoured by the Duchess of Cambridge. This Straight hair style is a simple yet effective way to exhibit your luscious locks under a gorgeous hat.
To eliminate any flyaways, apply a smoothing, anti-frizz product on wet hair before styling. Using a comb, centre part hair and remove any kinks with straighteners. You can then wear hair down. Alternatively, create a low pony tail using a mixed bristle cushion brush and fasten hair with a scrunchy. You could also fasten it with a band with a long tendril of hair wrapped round the band to make it invisible.
Cropped, short hair
This is one of my favourite looks, not only does it allow you to make a statement, but it also oozes elegance and sophistication. Every year I look out for this style, and it never disappoints.
Construct a deep side parting (roughly in line with the middle of your eyebrow) to the crown. Avoid creating too much volume or you’ll have a tough task to manage hair after you remove the hat. Keeping this sleek look makes it easier to avoid flat hat hair whilst maintaining a contemporary look.
Curly hair
Embrace your natural curls by using styling foam to create plenty of natural movement to the hair, without frizz. Upon removing your hat, run your fingers through your locks, lifting the hair from the root. Texturizing spray is also a good product to help maintain volume.
Shoulder length hair
For shoulder-length hair, I would recommend a traditional blow dry with the aim of adding some flow and movement. Then opt for hair straighteners to create a flat wave, which can be done by clamping sections of the hair and creating the letter ‘S’. For added texture, especially on fine or limp hair, sea-salt spray is very helpful.
