While daytime temperatures remain balmy for now as we enjoy yet another Indian Summer, the chilly nip in the early-morning air and in the evening is a clear reminder that autumn is just around the corner and winter only a little way behind. And that means it’s time to start thinking very seriously about your winter cover-up, AKA coats.
Key trends in coats this season, include the sleeveless and short-sleeve coat, shearling coats and, of course the blanket or unstructured coat. Cocoon coats, Duffle coats, vintage-styled coats and Military coats are all around, too.
For grown up women, the received wisdom about coats was to think of them as an investment and buy the best quality we could afford; “classic” was a widely-heard adjective in the context of coats; a “classic” coat was seen as an investment; a garment you would wear year after year.
But “classic” and “investment” can also spell boredom; sometimes we want to buy a truly sublime and sumptuous coat and keep on wearing it winter after winter. At other times we want to take on board a major shift in trends and just buy a new and very different coat to face the winter.
And then there is the dilemma of what type of coat you need. If you are mainly going to wear your coat to take the dog for his daily walk, you will want a rather different coat from a woman who commutes to an office every day. But what if you work and own a dog? Fortunately, with mass production and the truly excellent synthetic fabrics now available, there is the option to buy not one but several coats to match all the different areas of your life…
If you remember leading British designer Paul Costelloe, and admired his superb cut and tailoring, take a look at Windsmoor, for whom he has created a gorgeous coat collection in a range of lengths and colours that work beautifully for both city and weekend-wear.
