1980s girl band Bananarama AKA Siobhan, Sara and Keren are touring again this winter, after re-forming earlier in 2017.
All three of them look sensational and all of them are past their 55th birthday. Indeed, with 170 birthdays between them, Bananarama are flying the flag for Fabulous Over 55. But, of course, that’s no surprise to us at SoSensational!
Originally formed in London in 1981 by the three friends Sara Dallin, Siobhan Fahey and Keren Woodward, Bananarama was phenomenally successful with Top 10 hits including “It Ain’t What You Do…,” “Venus,” “Robert De Niro’s Waiting…” and “Love in the First Degree,” earning the group a listing in The Guinness Book of Records as the all-female group with the most chart entries in the world.
In 1986, they had a US number one with “Venus,” and from 1983 to 1988, eleven of their singles climbed into America’s Billboard Hot 100. Their fourth album Wow! topped the Australian album chart and the group earned several Brit Award nominations as well as other music-industry accolades.
In 1988, Siobhan left the group and was replaced by Jacquie O’Sullivan. After several more UK Top 10 hits, O’Sullivan departed and Sara and Keren continued Bananarama as a duo, having fresh hits including “More, More, More.”
In April of this year, Siobhan rejoined Bananarama and the original line-up will begin touring the UK next month/soon. Their 22-night tour begins in Belfast on November 9th and takes in more than a dozen British cities before culminating in the group’s second London concert on December 9th. Although many venues are sold out, some tickets remain.
As we said earlier, we think Keren, Siobhan and Sara look fabulous. But, as we also said earlier, that’s not a surprise! At SoSensational we embrace the idea of all women looking fabulous after 50 (and sensational after 60 and 70), though we acknowledge that it takes a bit more effort and requires us to be clever in our choices.
Bananarama have been clever in their choices of clothes and cosmetics, so let’s see what style ideas and tricks we can borrow.
When the girls appeared on the Graham Norton Show, they all wore black (surprise, surprise), but we love the more dramatic Red Alert colours seen here…
The photograph perfectly illustrates that there is a shade of red to suit each of us. With her dramatic Celtic colouring, Keren (left) looks especially good in that strong, clear crimson. Back in the day, Siobhan (centre), had hair a lot like Cyndy’s (somewhat ginger). With her colouring, Siobhan looks stunning in that bright-red biker jacket teamed with the red-and-orange print top. Blonde Sara refuses to be parted from black, but ramps up the glamour-wattage with that slouchy bomber jacket over the top.
There’s no compromising on make-up, either. We love the shapely brows and the smokey eyes, but we especially love those scarlet lips. Here’s how to do the red lip: carefully outline lips with a brush or pencil. Fill in with rich, red lip colour (we particularly love Rouge Dior Couture Colour Lipstick). Lightly blot colour with a tissue; reapply colour, blot again very lightly and apply Lipcote to help luscious lip colour stay on longer.

Bananarama appeared on the Graham Norton Show; they are going on a UK-wide tour. We wonder, can a new album be far behind? If you’re a fan, please let us know what you think (in the comment box, below).

I wanted to be all of Bananarama when I was young and I still do now. They’re amazing.
