Here we go again: on New Year’s Eve, a Daily Mail Online headline screamed: Nancy Shevell, 57, shows off “her sensational binkini body as she frolics on the beach” in St Bart’s.
Now, it was peak period for winter-sun holidays so the Mail could take its pick of celebrities “frolicking” on Caribbean beaches and showing off their sensational bikini bodies, but they chose Sir Paul McCartney’s wife, Nancy Shevell, who is fifty–seven.
Now, ladies of 50-plus, there are two principal reasons why the Mail chose Nancy Shevell AKA Lady McCartney. Reason 1: Because the Mail has a lot of readers around her age, and they thought it would appeal to them. Which we understand and approve.
Reason 2 is a less charitable interpretation and one which we do not approve: it is like showing pictures of chimps drinking tea or dogs smiling – it is unexpected and out of character… Except it’s not, is it? A woman of 57 looking good in a bikini in 2016 (or in 2017) is really not surprising. And certainly not so surprising that it makes headlines in the Daily Mail. C’mon guys (and girls), get with the programme; it is 2017; every woman who is over 50 doesn’t suddenly turn into your gran.
According to the Mail, Nancy has “got a figure befitting of (sic) a woman half her age”. Ignoring the howling grammatical error, why is it a figure befitting a woman half her age? Are all women over 50 overweight? Do all women under 30 have slender, toned bikini bodies? Er, no, we don’t think so…
By the way, we agree with the Mail on one thing: we think Nancy looks stunning. The Mail is right about her looking “great in a stylish navy two-piece” and a “wicker” fedora…. Not wicker, guys, wicker is for chairs, it is straw. It is the kind of sun-hat that is almost a uniform for chic women on Caribbean islands.
Apparently her “brunette tresses fell from underneath her hat in beachy waves”. Come on, she has done what every fashion-savvy woman does and jammed a great hat on her head to disguise beach hair AKA a bad hair day; wearing a great hat is Lesson 1 in Looking Stunning On A Beach Or Looking Cool By A Pool.
The Mail also congratulated her on “thick-rimmed shades.” (We think you mean oversize shades). Rocking a pair of oversized shades is Lesson 2 in Looking Stunning On A Beach Or Cool By A Pool: wear a great pair of sunnies to hide eyes and disguise absence of eye-make-up.
According to the report, “Nancy’s complexion looked unblemished.” and she “appeared to be wearing a pale pink lipstick.” Bronzer, blusher and a slick of lip-gloss are the three essentials to create that healthy, unmade-up look for beach or pool.
Steal her Style
To steal her Beach Style, you need the following: a great hat, oversized shades, and a touch of concealer beneat a light dusting of bronzer and blusher plus a slick of lip-gloss. She is also wearing some earrings, which look good, too.
We would also add a sarong to our packing list so we have something to tie casually around our hips while strolling on a beach, having lunch or sipping a sundowner.
Bikinis remain a popular choice for over-50s. The rules of bikini-wearing for over-50s are pretty much the same as the rules for dressing generally – avoid anyhing too brief and look fora bit of structure. Teeny, tiny tie-sided bikinis are adorable on little girls and skinny teens, but a bit more coverage and maybe a bit of structure/boning can be helpful for anyone with a woman’s body. We love Nancy’s blue bikini with its boy-shorts bottoms and well-cut bra top.
Bikini style tips:
- If your hips and tum aren’t as firm as you would wish, buy a bikini bottom in a size larger than you need so that there’s nothing to pinch and cause overspill!
- Some bikini bottoms are very skimpy over the bottom, some have better coverage. If your glutes are very firm and tanned, brief briefs will work for you; if not-so-firm, look for cuts with more coverage.
- If you are fuller busted, choose bikini tops with straps you can alter to ensure the most flattering fit.
