Businesswoman Carole Middleton, 61, mother of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, Pippa and James, perfectly illustrates how the right outfit (below, right) for age and body shape looks fresh, youthful and on-trend, while the wrong one (below, left) can look try-hard and dated (and, ironically, a bit frumpy despite the shorter hemline).
But before we focus on stealing Mrs Middleton’s style, we would like to offer her (and husband Michael) our congratulations on the marriage last weekend of their younger daughter Pippa to hedge fund manager James Matthews, son of David and Jane Matthews. The wedding was announced last year which gave Mrs Middleton ample time to source the perfect Mother-of-the-Bride outfit – and in our view she nailed it, again! After the powder blue ensemble she wore for the 2011 Royal Wedding of daughter Kate to Prince William, she stuck with the winning formula of pastel shades for a spring or summer wedding.
She returned to Catherine Walker & Co (who made her 2011 outfit) and this time rocked an exquisitely cut coat dress in a pale but warm shade of pink. Note the bracelet-length sleeves, which are very on-trend as well as very flattering.
As we have previously observed, Mrs Middleton has a great figure and good legs. And not just “for her age”; she has a great figure and good legs, full stop. But that blue dress (below left), which daughter Kate has also worn, shows how the wrong cut can be ageing and can add pounds. We love her in the navy coat dress, and clearly she felt the same way, as the pink coat-dress she wore as Mother-of-the-Bride was much closer in cut to the navy outfit shown here, but with bracelet-length sleeves.
Steal her style (in the navy coat and dress, or in her MoB outfit) for special occasions by wearing the best cut for your body type. The navy-blue princess-line coat, worn for Prince George’s Christening, is a perfect occasion outfit for an elegant grandma and would work as an elegant MoB outfit, too. The cut of the coat elongates her torso, as did the cut of that Catherine Walker & Co coat dress for Pippa’s wedding. She is wearing it over a simple shift dress and has accessorised perfectly with the wide-brim hat and low-heel courts. For the Christening, she chose colours which blend, while for her younger daughter’s wedding, she wore a matching hat.
Should any other elegant woman over 50 want any MoB tips, she could look here, or find Mother of the Bride beauty advice here.
The plain, low-cut court shoes which she invariably wears (low-heels here; higher heels at the wedding) are a clever trick to make legs appear longer.
You can tell from her smile that she knows she looks good in that navy outfit and in the pink MoB outfit. Her confidence shines through while in the cobalt dress her body language is defensive… we suspect she didn’t like what she saw in the mirror but god help anyone who points it out; we’ve all had outfits like that!
Her hair tucked away behind her ears in the big-brim hat, is also a good idea and very flattering – and worth copying if your hair is jaw-length or longer.
