From coffee to cocktails – the make-up tips and tricks that take you from breakfast-time to party-time!
When you have a party following a busy day at the office, you need a make-up that not only lasts from breakfast to bedtime, but one that’s also easy to build on for a hit of after-six glamour. Here’s what the experts recommend.
Begin early and, no, this doesn’t involve spending hours at the mirror, but choosing make-up that won’t slide off or crease easily – which starts that morning. “Always apply primer,” says top make-up artist Ariane Poole.” It creates an even surface so foundation sits better and needs less touch-ups come evening, so it’s good for quick changes.” Laura Mercier Foundation Primer, £29 is a favourite with lots of professional MUAs
Plan your eye make-up ahead, too. As a daytime base, stick to soft brown or taupe eyecolours with charcoal eyeliner as it’s an easy look to build on, and cream textures also help anchor the colours you add for the evening. Try Benefit new Creaseless Cream Shadow in No Pressure!, £15.50
Next, stroke Bobbi Brown Long Wear Cream Eyeshadow Stick in Shadow (a charcoal grey), £20, along the roots of the upper eyelashes, adds Ariane. “Smudge it slightly, add mascara and that’s your daytime look. For evenings, add more of it over the whole lid, including in the outer corners and under the eyes, blending away to nothing just above the crease, and that’s your smoky eye look. You can add pure black along the lashline for extra punch.”
Finish your evening eyes with mascara, plus individual fake lashes at the outer corners. These add a lift that helps eyes look more open. Try Eylure Pro-Lash, £9.49
Don’t forget blusher. Prestige MUA Abby Ireland recommends BD Trade Secrets Velvet Cream Cheek Colour, £4.99 from Tesco. “It won’t disappear once you add fixing powder. Then, in the evening, add blusher powder on top. The three layers give more staying power than powder blusher alone.”
Finally, “Invest in a separate lip primer,” recommends celebrity make-up artist Katrina Appie. “You can then have a drink without worrying about your lipcolour coming off.” Try Elizabeth Arden Lip-Fix Cream, £20.
Add a soft nude, bright coral or sheer red lipcolour to add warmth, avoiding anything too matt (which looks harsh and dry on an older lip) or too shiny (so if you love gloss, simply blot it lightly for a more uptodate finish) and you’re good to go. Surratt Beauty Lip Lustres have a stained glass finish that lasts well and comes in 14 shades, including Flamant, £22.
