This week, SoSensational brings you not so much a Style Steal as a Style Steer…
How not to rock a trend at 50-plus… We are looking at the style choices made by American actress, Demi Moore, 53, the star of several of our favourite films from the early 90s.
Demi seems to be on a quest to look young, possibly younger than her adult daughters, Tallulah and Scout.
We think that someone should gently point out to Demi that her quest to appear young is actually quite ageing and makes her, at times appear just a bit bonkers (Demi, you can’t sue us for saying that, because no jury would convict, after seeing the outfit here, the wide-leg burgundy cord dungarees, yellow stripy top, plaits/braids and floral headpiece).
We love all your films, Demi, and we think you were especially brilliant and truly beautiful in Indecent Proposal and Ghost. You are still very beautiful and you still have the body of a 25-year-old… and we are definitely not saying that at 53 you have to “grow old gracefully;” we just think you should reconsider some of your ill-advised fashion choices; get a stylist and pay attention to him or her or listen to your daughters who both manage to look on-point and stylish and could probably help you to look on-point and stylish without looking as if you are trying way too hard to look young.
Last week, Jan was quoted in the Daily Mail saying: “Gimmicks after a certain age are best ignored. What’s really cool is to feel comfortable and confident.” Jan also said: “There are toned-down ways to rock a trend so that you don’t look daft.”
We would now like to offer that advice to Demi: those wide-leg burgundy cord dungarees are a gimmick which would have been best ignored; by adding the yellow top and the floral crown (unless it was a gift from a small child whom you couldn’t risk offending) you just added to the sense of a sartorial car-crash.
Don’t try to look 12, Ms Moore; play to your strengths– your height, your fabulous body, your beautiful face (still beautiful even if slightly older looking) and your dramatic colouring. Playing to our strengths is what we all should do as we grow older; play to our strengths and camouflage or distract from the weaknesses.
Style Steer. Here’s what Demi or anyone over-50, especially anyone with a great bod, should have worn to look youthful and on-trend (so still wearing berry/burgundy) for a casual night out with her daughters. Oh, and one final thing to steer away from: plaits; never good on anyone over 30, and even 30 is pushing it… Get a blow-dry (that’s a “blow-out” where you live Demi)…
What do you think of Demi’s outfit in the pic? Do you agree or disagree with our advice? You can comment below…

I totally agree with everything you say about her fashion faux pas. I’m 57 and trying to find my new style feet again (difficult) but I think what you said about Sharon Stone is spot on when you have a good figure, ie., Sexy and Stylish rather than Laboured and Lost (Demi).
Thanks so much for your comment, Stephney. It’s always good when readers agree with us and we really appreciate you letting us know! We wish you well finding your new style feet. We created SoSensational because we realised that finding style feet in our 50s was a challenge!
