GLOVE LOVE

Gloves are odd things: a throwback to the first half of the 20^th century, when no lady would leave the house without her gloves and a hat.  But while hats are now mostly reserved for special occasions, gloves remain a winter essential for all stylish, sane women.

We think the teen and 20-somethings habit of pulling their jumper sleeves down over their hands to keep their hands warm is inelegant and impractical – you will still have cold hands and stretched/ripped jumper sleeves.

Woolly gloves keep your hands toasty warm and are available in pretty much every colour you might want to match your coat or to provide a contrast with it.

And then, of course, there are hand-warmers and flip-top gloves. The former are mittens that stop at your fingers, the latter are, in case you aren’t au fait with them, are fingerless gloves with a mitten-bit that flips over to keep the rest of your hands warm.  We think both of these are mainly for young mums and those addicted to their Tablets (the tech device as opposed to the kind you take for a headache) , who need to use their fingers unencumbered by gloves. But if you need to keep fingers free, here is our pick:

If you drive a car, woolly gloves will need to be kept for non-driving days as it can be difficult to get a grip on the steering wheel while wearing woollen gloves.  Instead, choose leather or suede gloves.  The default colour for these is invariably black or chocolate depending on whether your favourite neutrals are black and grey or in the brown tones.

But if you love colour, you can inject a jolt of brilliant colour into your winter apparel with a pair of leather gloves in your favourite shade. We love leather gloves in vibrant primaries such as red, yellow and  blue – as well as in orange, emerald, purple, burgundy and fuchsia or in an animal or floral print, any of which will ensure you look fabulously chic!
