Marc Jacobs first plundered the seventies dressing up box and put the 1970s on the catwalk back in 2012. Frida Giannini at Gucci followed but the trend was a slow-burner. Since then, a whole slew of designers have seen the fabulousness of the 70s and for S/S15 and beyond it is a key trend.
The BIG QUESTION is: can a grown-up woman do The 70s? There used to be a fashion rule “If you remembered a trend from the first time around, leave it alone.” But trends now return with such manic frequency, that if we were to observe the rule, no-one over the age of 10 would be able to find a thing to wear.
The key to getting this look right lies in proportion. Team your wide, flared trousers with a skinny top so you keep a shape. Jackets need to be short and fitted, though a longer fitted jacket can also work if you want to cover your rear. But shaping is crucial. As a grown-up, it is important to know where to stop with this look. Over 50s should NOT add a fringed bag or floppy, big-brim hat – you will look like you are in fancy dress!
