Pleats are a key trend for S/S16 but if you are anything like Jan and Cyndy, you are a bit scared of pleats!
They could make your hips look too large, or if you are very slender those vertical lines could make you look too thin. Or maybe they remind you of your old school uniform!
Also, knowing exactly how to wear pleats to look on-trend can be a challenge, in terms of what top-half to team pleats with, and how to accessorise. So here is your simple guide to how to work the pleats trend for S/S 16.
We are focusing on pleated skirts and the occasional pleated dress. Pleats on top and tees are fairly simple – just keep the bottom half plain:
When choosing pleated pieces, colour should be a consideration on two counts: if you choose a pleated skirt (in almost any shape) in a pastel or very bright shade, you run the risk of your bottom looking big (No-one said pleats were easy to wear!). Also, if you want a pleated skirt to do double duty for work and off-duty, if you choose one in black or another neutral, it will be far more versatile.
Stylists’ trick alert: buy a pleated skirt a size larger than you need (which, with a budget brand could mean 2 sizes larger) so that any fullness does NOT sit at your waist or on your top hip. Also, if the skirt falls well down to mid-calf it will be slimming and will look more expensive!
For S/S16, accessories are what mark you out as in-the-know trend-wise. A pair of classic plimsolls is the super hot shoe to team with pleats – white plimsolls, of the kind many of us wore for PE way-back-when are totally on trend, but classic plimsolls in a pastel, in a paintbox-bright, in a metallic or in a dark neutral (which you can then wear for the office) all look equally fashion-forward. Alternatively, very chunky platform sandals look super hot. Basically, it’s any shoe with attitude to contrast with demure and ladylike vibe given off by pleats.
