Career changes aren’t just for the young, but all the guides to what to wear to a job interview seem to be!
Being 50+ shouldn’t stop you from attaining those career goals. So, if you’re shooting for a promotion, or looking into a change of career, your interview outfit is important for impressing the company you’ve got yours eyes on.
It’s not just about the classic navy blazer, skirt and white shirt any more (though we have seen some incredibly chic ones as you’ll see!), a stylish outfit can help you stand out in a good way.
Before you pick your outfit, it’s important to gauge the company and their ethos. Try to research the office dress code and dress similarly; though we’d recommend going slightly smarter than the staff. Pick an outfit that suits the style of the workplace- a fashion retail manager would be looking for a sensational, stylish outfit, whereas an accountants would be looking for a more traditional, smart outfit. Regardless, we’ve found some gorgeous pieces that are sure to impress, so take a look at our tips and tricks that will prove you’re a great fit for the company.
The Chic Blazer Suit
Fortunately, there are so many blazer suits around at the minute that you don’t need to settle on a boring look. Whether you prefer stylish check pieces, classic monochromes or bright colours to really stand out, there’s a choice for everyone.
The Classic Suit Skirt
If you prefer a pretty skirt to trousers, there are so many stylish skirt and blazer combos out there if you’re looking for a totally put-together, professional look. Fitted blazers look smart and professional, and there are a range of different skirt lengths to suit every taste.
The Shift Dress
There’s a shift dress to suit every body shape (find out yours here), and they look oh-so chic for an interview! Teamed with a blazer or jacket in the chill, or smart courts during sunnier days; they’re simple and an often cheap interview outfit if you’re on a budget. Choose from a dress with a fitted waistline, a sleeved piece or a smaller v neck!
The Shirt
Pussy bows, chic patterns, blouson sleeves… it’s not just about the crisp white shirt any more! Depending on the trousers, skirt or jacket you wear, you can easily find a matching shirt or blouse to wow your interviewer. We just love a pussy bow with flared trousers or a smart pencil skirt, a patterned blouse with some classic black trousers, a blouson sleeved piece teamed with some high-waisted trousers, or a white shirt under an it blazer.
The Trousers
Depending on your body shape, there’s a pair for you. Everything from nautical inspired wide leg looks to tummy-holding high-waisted trousers can look absolutely gorgeous for an interview.
The Skirt
We mentioned the suit skirt, but a skirt doesn’t have to be teamed with a blazer! Make your skirt look equally chic under your jacket or just with a smart blouse. Pencil skirts look stylish, or petite ladies should choose an above-the-knee length with tights to elongate their pins so they’ll feel even more confident.
The Jacket
The jacket of course depends on the weather, but there’s certainly a range of styles for you to choose from. Trench coats look gorgeous on city slickers, boucle jackets look infinitely chic, or a smart wool coat is perfect for the chillier weather. Of course, if it’s pouring it down with rain or extra cold, your interviewer won’t mind your toasty parka coming in with you- just remember to take it off once you’re inside!
The Shoes
Above everything, we’d recommend choosing shoes that are comfortable over stylish- we don’t want to be falling into the interview room in our stilettos! We’d recommend a smart patent or simple coloured court shoe in a low or kitten heel, a smart brogue for an edgy look, or some chic loafers if you’re looking at an active or long interview.
