At an improbable 83, Joan Collins is a tad older than the SoSensational 50-plus demographic but she is such an iconic glamour-puss, we thought we would make an exception for La Collins…
As well as an acting career which saw her appear in films alongside Hollywood greats such as Frank Sinatra and, of course, her starring role as Alexis Colby in Dynasty, she has written 16 books both fiction and non-fiction.
Her writing career began in 1985 with a best-selling autobiography, Past Imperfect, which she followed with The Joan Collins Beauty Book. Her debut novel, Prime Time, was published in 1988, followed by a second novel, Love & Desire & Hate in 1990.
Her 1994 beauty book My Secrets, remained on the best-seller list for over three months. Other novels and a second autobiography, Second Act, followed (going straight into the best-seller lists, naturally). Her latest novel, The St. Tropez Lonely Hearts Club has just been published in the UK.
But as much as we admire her talent for acting and writing, it is her ability to stay looking sensational and glamorous long after it is expected of us, for which we really love her at SoSensational. So, although her style is not “fashion” as we know it, she is certainly not taking the “old lady” route. And we say, get used to it, world, because in the future we predict there will be a lot more 83-year-olds in hot red peplum outfits and heels!
Steal her style (or maybe just borrow the principles) by wearing one colour neckline to hemline (Joan Collins is not tall, so she employs the trick of wearing a single colour or print from neck to hem to appear taller.)
If you have a bod worth showing off, show it off, like La Collins. It is far too easy to cover up in loose-fitting outfits that hide our assets.
And if you can wear heels, as Ms Collins does – at least when she is promoting her books, or whatever, do rock them. We are not suggesting you wear them to do the supermarket shop, but if you know the longest walk you’ll have to do is kerbside to dinner-table, it is worth the effort for the effect high heels have in making us stand taller (as well, obvs, as looking taller), and making our legs look better.
Also, wear great colour – like the scarlet Ms Collins chose for that peplum top and pencil skirt. We love the effect/impact of the red, but would not suggest a peplum frill with such a voluptuous bosom! But the pencil skirt is a good look.
And, of course, apply a full maquillage – because let’s face it – after 60 is when we most need it! Ms Collins has also kept going with that rich brown hair colour – her own or the hair-sorcerers’ art. And good for her – why go grey if you truly suit being dark brown (as she does).
