As it is high summer and Liz Hurley has her own beachwear brand, ‘Elizabeth Hurley Beach’, we thought this might be the perfect moment to look at Liz Hurley’s style and perhaps steal some ideas.
Aged 52, she is looking good, but we are not going to act all shocked that she looks fabulous at 52… of course she does. We just accept – no, not ‘accept,’ we embrace – the notion that women are looking completely fabulous after 50…
Sorry, back to Liz Hurley. Most of us probably remember her wearing that famous Versace dress with the safety pins, pictured on Hugh Grant’s arm at the UK premier of “Four Weddings…”
The infamous frock didn’t do the film, Hugh Grant, Versace or, indeed, Ms Hurley herself, any harm.
She finally got away from being famous for wearing “that dress” and is now a film producer, as well as having that swim and beach collection. She is, of course, also a model and has been associated with cosmetic brand Estée Lauder for more than 20 years.
If we want to steal some of her glam style, Estée Lauder is a good place to start as they offer sensational skincare, including Advanced Night Repair Serum (which Jan has been successfully using for over 20 years), and superb make-up products, which will help us all to stay looking glamorous. And, of course, they have a gorgeous fragrance collection, which is advertised in campaigns featuring Liz Hurley.
She is, of course, in shape. But then, as we have previously observed, if you are in the celebrity galaxy, you have to stay in shape. And, of course, with her beach collection (for which she is often photographed), she is compelled to disavow crisps and chocolate!
Stealing her style in clothes is, therefore, harder. But even for those of us not blessed with Hurley’s body, there are style tricks to steal: we love that she wears bright colours and think she, like many women over 50, has recognised that colour can be infinitely flattering… Cleverly, she is also wearing dresses in a cut to really flatter her body-shape. Although she is very slender she possesses a rather un-model like full bust (and an old-school Hollywood-style glamour, which she used to full effect in that famous Versace frock). So, the dresses are fashion-forward in colour and details, but have been picked for their flattering cut, which is a principle we can all embrace.
In particular, we are paying attention to the dress lengths. Even with very slim, shapely legs, midi-length can be deadly if the midi is the wrong length. We note that she has picked a midi with a deep slit (pink). That avoids a horizontal line across the widest part of the calf. The knee-length dress (orange) falls just to the top of her knee, which is the perfect dress length and proportion for her.
Ms Hurley’s footwear: hmm, to steal or not to steal. With her very slim legs those ankle-strap sandals work perfectly with the knee-length orange dress. The same pair worn with the pink midi, not so much…
In general, ankle straps are great if you have slim ankles and long legs, but should be avoided otherwise as they can foreshorten the leg…
We love her hair, but as we’ve talked a lot about keeping one’s hair colour in Style Steals and about not feeling obliged to cut hair short or let our hair go grey after 50, unless, obvs, you want to, we won’t repeat ourselves…
We love her make-up – Estée Lauder of course. Her lippy is a slick of Pure Color Envy Shine in Baby Cashmere and eyes are enhanced with Double-Wear Zero-Smudge Eyeliner and Sumptous Extreme Mascara (both in black, naturally).
