You know how it is, sometimes, we look at a woman of 55 or 60 and we think ‘she looks her age.’
Then sometimes, we look at a woman of 55 or 60 and we think ‘she does not look her age.’
What makes the difference?
We know genetics plays a part. And lifestyle, of course. And health. Ill-health can really take a toll on weight, facial lines and more… And then there’s body shape; the mysterious process by which, after 55 or so, inches go on round our waist and tummy, although we’re not eating more; (less, in fact), and we’re going to the gym just as often…
And then there are celebrities looking fabulous at 58 or whatever, making our confidence plunge lower…
The first thing to be said is that we can all learn from celebs. Yes, we know they have a legion of stylists and make-up artists to ensure they look fabulous. That’s partly because celebs’ career depends on them continuing to look good, so they can’t afford to stop looking fabulous. But we can learn a few of their tricks.
For we non-celebs, who do not have a career that is dependent on looking good, there may come a point when we are tempted to throw up our hands and say ‘I can’t be bothered’. It may be that we genuinely ‘can’t be bothered’ or it may be that we simply don’t have the energy for seemingly frivolous stuff like colouring our hair, applying make-up or putting together a fabulous outfit.
At SoSensational, we think the ‘can’t be bothered’ point used to be 50, when women were expected to fade into invisibility. Expected, that is, by society’s cultural norms so we might think it’s easier to oblige, to let our hair go grey, to forget the make-up, to dress in a beige sack.
But not today. Today, 50 is the new 30; today 60 is the new 30, 70 is the new 30 . We have fabulous fashion and astounding products to keep us looking fabulous.
But sometimes even when we can be bothered, the result doesn’t please us and that could be because we have stopped being adventurous and experimental with our look.
Before we consider the pros and cons of being adventurous with our look, let us take you back to being 15, reading ‘Jackie’ (if you’re a Boomer) or perhaps your mum’s copy of Vogue and yearning to try the new lipstick shades, or the season’s hot colour and new hemline. If you are anything like us, that experimentation was sometimes disastrous but invariably illuminating, as we all learn from our fails as well as from our successes.
So knowing what works for us and sticking to it is an advantage; it is safe.
But failing to try out new looks and declining to dip our toe into new trends is also a disadvantage because it can instantly marks us out as ‘older’. And we know that that line between, on the one hand, finding what suits us and sticking with it and, on the other hand, with being in a rut, fashionwise (and beauty wise), is a very fine one…
We know it can be hard to dip your toe into new trends, to be adventurous. None of us want to get it wrong and feel silly.
We could say ‘Here are the rules: Always do this… Never do that…’ but it is all far more nuanced than that. And looking fabulous is sooo dependent on our body shape which is why at SoSensational we look at every trend on a case-by-case basis, always remembering that most of us are not ex-models! So we can help you to use trickery and clever style advice so that you don’t have to constantly reinvent the wheel in order to look fabulous…because our passion is to help you to carry on looking fabulous!
