According to make-up artist and brand creator Bobbi Brown, make-up is to make you “look like yourself, only better”.And that is the philosophy we espouse at SoSensational. Make-up is not a disguise, but it can give you a huge boost when you are feeling less than fabulous and, applied well, using the right shades, it is the greatest instant, anti-ageing method known to woman. And, in the real world, few women over the age of 40 can get away with no make up at all. Some great looking older women may look very natural, but that doesn’t mean they are not wearing make-up; just that they have applied it skilfully, with the aim of achieving a “natural” look because they know that works for them. But many women now in their 50s and 60s – particularly those who didn’t wear make-up when they were younger because they didn’t want or need to – are nervous about using make-up, frightened of over-doing it and looking silly, or of applying it incorrectly. Some of us are frightened of trying a new product or colour and, as a result, get into a rut, using shades and products that suited us decades earlier but may not suit our colouring now. The best thing about make-up in the noughties, is that the make-up houses recognise that women want make-up that truly suits them. Designers may send models down the runway with no eyebrows, or acid-yellow eye-shadow, or three pairs of fake lashes, but – unlike the 1960s, when many of us first learned to apply make-up – no-one expects us, whatever our age, to do the same.
