Mary Berry is 81. And isn’t she amazing!
We are full of admiration for how she has not let a little matter of years or age get in the way of her flourishing career.
We so admire her decision not to abandon the BBC and follow the dough (so to speak) when The Great British Bake-Off goes to Channel 4.
AND because Mary makes good fashion choices most of the time, we are delighted to feature her in Style Steal. (Brands are catching on that age is no barrier – especially now that Gucci is using 79-year-old Vanessa Redgrave in the Ad campaign for its 2017 Cruise Collection).
Jan has a special place in her heart for Mary Berry as they both had the same publisher, Piatkus Books, way back in the 1980s – Mary Berry obviously for her wonderful cookery books, Jan for a fashion and beauty book.
Mary does like her Bomber jackets. The fashion industry would hate to admit it, but we think 81-year-old Mary Berry has done more to make the bomber jacket a mainstream hit than any number of pictures of celebs or models wearing them. She has proved what we’re always banging on about. It’s not about age, but about how you style a garment. Mary especially suits a bomber jacket because she is, essentially, a “straight” body shape. When she’s not in a bomber, she rocks a lot of printed blazers, which we also love.
Steal her style in a printed bomber jacket paired with dark jeans.
We also love that blue maxi. Again it works with Mary’s lean frame. If, like her, you are “straight” and slender, satin or any shiny fabric is your friend and ally because it fills you out and gives you curves. If, on the other hand, you are curvy or carry any excess weight, shiny fabric is best avoided except as a trim on, maybe, a neckline.
The bright blue is flattering and very on-trend. The single colour makes her appear taller – a clever trick worth stealing. As for make-up, Mary often rocks a smoky eye in shades of dark grey and navy which are flattering with her blue eyes. Her smoky eye technique is definitely worth stealing.
Mary Berry – you are a fashion icon, a role model for mature women, and a National Treasure. And that’s besides being a sensational cook, baker and TV sensation. We applaud you!
Please share with us what you think about Mary’s style. And her decision to remain with the BBC!
