If you’re taking a last minute holiday, bear in mind that the UK’s disappointing summer may mean you’ve forgotten how seriously hot weather requires make-up that’s virtually melt proof.
Whether you’re swimming, sightseeing in hot and sweaty conditions, or drinking in non-air conditioned bars, it should stay put through heat, humidity and even the horror of your partner’s ‘dad-dancing’ (making waterproof mascara something of a must). Here’s what’s around…
Complexion colour. Make fake tan your best friend for a chic, golden, more uniform skin colour with a natural, non-powdery finish. Try St Tropez Self Tan Luxe Facial Oil, £23, which builds up gradually and also hydrates your skin with brazil nut oil.
For a more velvety, finished look, Estee Lauder Double Wear Light Stay-In-Place Makeup, £30, in 10 shades, provides up to 15 hours of impeccable sweat proof, humidity-resisting wear without looking caked
Rosy cheeks. Choose gel cheek colour or sheer stains for the most natural flush with little risk of it running in the heat – just bear in mind that it won’t work over face powder. Try Benefit Benetint, £24.50, which leaves a sheer rose stain that would last through a marathon swim, or Clinique Cheek Pop in Pink Pop or Rosy Pop, £17
Eyeshadow. Stay away from anything greasy, especially kohl pencils which are virtually guaranteed to melt – and even pressed powders contain some oils or waxes. Take a tip from the pros. Top MUA Louise Constad says, “There’s a trick to getting your favourite eye pencil to last in the heat: use a powder eyeshadow in a matching colour over the top to set it. That will keep it in its place!” Alternatively, invest in specially-formulated long-wear eye makeup, such as Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Cream Shadow Stick in Taupe, £21, which can be smudged over the entire eyelid, applied to the socket line to add depth or just stroked along the lashline.
Lash colour. Bear in mind that lash tinting will darken blond lash-tips, but it won’t build up to make your lashes look thicker. For denser, more volumised lashes, invest in a good waterproof mascara such as Bourjois Volume Glamour Push Up Waterproof, £9
Lipcolour. Finally, go for stayput lipsticks for colour that lasts despite the hottest weather, stickiest ice-creams, coolest drinks and longest days (and nights). Louise says that unless you take them off with cleanser they’d probably last through World War 3. Her favourite is the economically-priced Rimmel Provocalips, which comes in seven shades, £99
