Meryl Streep, an unbelievable, 66, loves wearing black, as we can see from these pictures of her, dressed for the Golden Globes, for The Oscars and for nothing in particular – just a chilly day in Manhattan in that black wool coat.
It’s doubtful any of us need lessons from the Hollywood actress in turning to black as our go-to colour. It is a favourite in Jan’s wardrobe, though not in Cyndy’s (Cyndy says “Black drains me of every bit of colour; I look like a corpse in black”). But for those of us over 50 and not blessed with Cyndy’s strawberry-blonde colouring, black is a dependable friend. What we can learn from the Oscar-winning star of such films as Suffragette, Iron Lady and Into The Woods, is not to wear black too close to our face – except, of course when it’s a coat, which is when that faux fur collar, a pair of earrings and glossy lips and blusher counter the deadening effect of all-black near the face. For evening wear or parties, we can all steal this celebrity’s way with black, and ensure we show a bit of flesh at the neckline, add earrings and, if it works for you a chunky necklace…
