There’s something deliciously pampering about using a face mask – right up until the door bursts open and the children/ grandchildren barge in. So much for relaxation…
Thankfully, the indignities of thick green or beige paste masks have been replaced with sheet masks instead. Despite their making you look a bit like a serial killer (which might at least make the little ones think twice before entering), they can be whipped off in a nanosecond.
Mind you, if you want to make the hubby scream like a little girl, try jumping out from behind a door while you’re wearing it…
Of course sheet masks have excellent skin benefits too. A trend that developed from South Korea, they are literally sheets of cloth or paper that are saturated in nurturing ingredients. You just drape them over your face after cleansing, then leave them for the usual 10-20 minutes until your skin has soaked up their benefits. Their occlusive cover seals in the ingredients underneath, which is said to increase penetration and effectiveness. Most are drenched in a thick serum-like formula of vitamins, minerals and moisturising agents, making them especially good for dull, dry, lacklustre, line-prone skins, which means that afterwards your complexion should be noticeably plumped, glowing and radiant. To apply, you simply smooth the mask downwards from your forehead so that the cut-out eyes and mouth areas line up with your own, then lie down so that it stays in place.
Afterwards, when you take off the mask – which stays in one piece – you simply sling it in the bin and massage any residue into your skin with your fingertips. There’s no need to rinse off, so this is as mess-free as it gets. You’ll also find specialist versions for the eyes, too. Here are a few worth trying, all priced from £5-£12 per treatment.
Indeed Labs Hydraluron Moisture Boosting Mask, £19.99 for 4, contains time-released hyaluronic acid for 24-hour hydration. It’s nirvana for dry skins, and not too spendy, either.
Estee Lauder Micro Essence Infusion Mask, £50 for 6, leaves skin beautifully dewy. The company is a little vague about the exact ingredients but the bottom line is that it features micronutrients and peptides.
Suqqu Face Stretch Mask, £72 for 6, is crammed with hyaluronic acid and active plant extracts, so it helps treat dehydration, lines and sagging. It even has extra folds at the chin which enable the mask to be pulled upwards towards the temples to ‘lift’ and firm the jawline. Cate Blanchett is said to be a fan.
Shiseido Benefiance WrinkleResist 24 Pure Retinol Express Eye Mask, £59 for 12, benefits wrinkles, dryness and undereye circles using a combination of retinol, hyaluronic acid and various collagen-boosting actives. Tip: it can also be used on laugh lines around the mouth.
Have you tried a sheet mask? What did you think?
