Heading to Royal Ascot or a summer wedding?
If you are heading to Royal Ascot, or to a wedding this summer, we assume you are planning to wear a lightweight outfit whatever the weather. In case it is a cold day, the way to keep a smile on your face, is to wear a thermal vest under your summer outfit. M&S have a pack of two strappy thermal vests, (£14). One of those tucked under your outfit, could save you turning blue with cold…
If you are going to Royal Ascot, the dress code is quite strict:
Nothing strapless is permitted, nor anything with spaghetti straps or halter-neck. None of those is permitted, even if worn under a jacket or pashmina.
Dresses and skirts must be of ‘modest length,’ defined as ‘falling to just above the knee or longer.’
Trouser suits are permitted, but the code is very strict over what constitutes ‘a trouser suit’ and no cheating is allowed. The rules have been updated to allow jumpsuits but, again, a jumpsuit must conform to the rules.
The rules demand ‘hats’ not fascinators. However fascinators are permitted, but they must cover the head properly, and they must have a base of no less than 4in/10cm in diameter.

When planning your outfit, decide where you want the focus to be – your hat or your dress. Then put your look together with that in mind.
Look here for Royal Ascot dresses There are so many truly gorgeous dresses around this season, all perfect for Ascot and summer weddings so, whether you like print or plain, on-the-knee or midi, you have lots of options.
Take a look here to see if there is a jacket/blazer to pair with your dress. You could consider one that exactly matches your dress, or look for one that simply tones with it. Keep in mind that you don’t have to keep your jacket/blazer to wear only with a specific dress. You can get better use from a pretty summer jacket by teaming it with jeans or a summer skirt for an evening out.
If you prefer a pashmina, consider buying one in a neutral colour so that you can wear it with other outfits and a pashmina is a holiday essential, too.
When choosing ahandbag, consider a cross-body bag, or a grab-bag or clutch bag with a strap or a chain so that you can hang it on a shoulder or over your arm when you need your hands free for a glass of wine, or better still, to hold aloft the winning race ticket! You may need your make-up for a quick fix during the day, so think about buying a bag that will be big enough to hold your daily essentials, without it resembling a weekend-bag, obviously!
High heels are wonderful for a summer wedding outfit. For Ascot, not so much. There’s a lot of lawn at Ascot and nothing will ruin your look quicker than muddy or grass-stained heels! Instead, consider an on-trend block heel. or, a low, kitten heel (slightly easier to keep from sinking into the grass), If you are wearing a dress or a skirt that is midi-length and has volume, you could look very on-trend with some summery brogues.
Obviously, you plan to wear a hat… Keep in mind that you are going to wear this all day, so ensure it’s comfortable and not too heavy. The shape of the hat needs to be in harmony with your face shape, so do take a look at this guide to finding the perfect hat for your face shape.
Whether you choose a hat or a fascinator, wearing your hair up or behind your ears generally looks better. It’s usually good to hide the fringe, too. Use hairspray or hair-grips to hold hair back (making sure that hair-grips are hidden, obvs).
Earrings should complement, but never compete with the hat – after all, you’ve gone to a lot of trouble to get the right headwear so you want to show it off to perfection!
