At SoSensational Towers, we all LURVED the two outfits that Samantha Cameron wore on Friday, following the previous day’s General Election.
As we are sure you know by now, the neat and ladylike little navy-blue number Sam Cam wore to accompany her husband to the Palace was a suit by top UK designer Paul Smith while the sassier blue-and-lemon mix shift she wore to return to Number 10 was by British design duo, Preen.
Correctly known as Preen by Thornton Bragazzi, the label is one of the UK’s big fashion success stories. Created by Justin Thornton and Thea Bragazzi, the couple met aged 18 and launched their fashion label in London’s hip Portobello Road area in 1996. Their design aesthetic is a punk-Victoriana mash-up, but very wearable – especially since beginning to show their runway collection at New York Fashion Week in 2007. Apart from Sam Cam, clients include Michelle Obama, Scarlett Johanssen, Cate Blanchett and Kirsten Dunst.
If you have seen runway shots of that the sassy long-sleeve blue-and-lemon mix shiftdress, as well as the Sam Cam version, you should note that the clever duo changed the production garment, making it less gimmicky and infinitely more wearable by giving it a straight hem instead of the harder-to-wear handkerchief hem with its generous slit.
Also don’t read too much into the semiotics of the blue-and-lemon mix which pundits suggested were about a further Tory Lib-Dem coalition. Rubbish! Preen love that colour combo and used it widely in their S/S15 collection. Mrs C would have ordered that dress back in February and probably just thought it was a pretty and flattering colour combo, which it was…
If you love Preen, but don’t love designer price tags, take a look at Preen EDITION, the duo’s great collection for the Designers at Debenhams range.
