We love our sunglasses because great sunnies are a fashion statement right there on our face, for everyone to see.
They hide the absence of eye-make-up. Oh yes, and they protect our eyes…
So we don’t need an excuse to wear sunnies and we doubt you need one. But if you want an excuse (apart, obvs, from it being summer) then Sunglasses Day (yes, really) on June 27th is the perfect excuse.
For us (and we think for you) sunglasses need to fulfil three criteria: they should be on trend, they should suit our face and they should protect our eyes from UV rays.
On the subject of protecting our eyes, the American Academy of Opthalmology offers this advice:
Sun damage to eyes can occur anytime during the year, so be sure to wear UV-blocking sunglasses (and a hat with a brim or peak) any time you’re in bright sunlight. Don’t be fooled by clouds: the sun’s rays can pass through haze and thin clouds.
The AAO reminds us that too much exposure to UV light raises the risks of eye diseases, including cataracts and cancer.
The key advice is to check that sunglasses are not just fashion-forward but offer proper protection from UV light. Indeed, the prestigious Mayo Clinic reminds us that for optimum eye-health, we should look for sunglasses that: block 99 to 100 % of UVA and UVB rays; screen out 75 to 90 percent of visible light; have lenses that are perfectly matched in colour and free of distortions and imperfections; have lenses that are grey for proper colour recognition…
We love your advice Mayo Clinic and we know we are shallow, but we regret we may have to ignore some of it in favour of fashion….
On the subject of sunglasses suiting us, it is about their shape reflecting our face-shape. If your face shape is very angular, angled cat-eye sunnies that reflect your face shape will be most flattering. If your face is square, sunnies that are square or square-ish will flatter you. If your face is round, rounded frames will flatter you. If your face is oval, pretty much any sunglasses will suit you.
Oversize sunnies are currently on-trend but there are big sunnies and there are huge sunnies – it’s all about scale. And do keep in mind when trying on that if you are accustomed to a small frame, anything big will feel strange, and vice-versa! A good way to judge if sunnies suit you (especially if you can’t see well in a mirror) is to take a selfie to look at when you can see well.
What is your favourite shape of sunnies to wear?
