We were going to tell you that if you want to look totally sensational in swimwear, you need to (forgive the pun) splash out on it.
At SoSensational Towers we were musing on the idea that expensive swimwear does more for you than less expensive swimwear.
But then we had a rethink, and decided the crucial factor these days is not price, it is much more about choosing the right shape swimsuit or bikini for your body shape.
Remember that fabulous photo of Helen Mirren in a red bikini five or six years ago? The one that appeared everywhere, and led all the papers to say things like: “Phwoar, who knew a 62-year-old could look this good in a bikini…” or those sentiments if not those exact words. The appropriate response is that Dame Helen Mirren has a great bikini bod for any age and she showcased it sensationally well in a bikini that was exactly the right shape for her. So, as we get to the end of July and we are thinking about imminent trips, or perhaps thinking about September or winter-sun resort getaways or cruises, we thought we would offer you some fresh swimwear inspiration.
As we have mentioned before Jan and Cyndy have different views on swimwear for grown-up women. Jan prefers bikinis Cyndy prefers one-piece swimsuits and tankinis, which are effectively a one-piece swimsuit in two pieces.
Recently, Jan has been buying bikinis with more structured tops and finds them more flattering because the boning and under-wiring gives her good support. She has also found great bikini bottoms which are deep enough to offer proper coverage. Jan also welcomes being able to buy bikini tops and briefs separately to ensure the perfect fit:
Cyndy, meanwhile, has found brilliant one-piece swimsuits and tankinis which give great support and are in her favourite colours:
What Jan and Cyndy both agree on is the need for fabulous cover-ups so that when they go for a stroll along the beach, or have a poolside lunch or a cocktail at sundown, they look chic and elegant (or if not chic and elegant, are at least not flashing naked thighs):
If you like a one-piece and need something to flatten your tummy, do take a look at our blog, Tummy-Taming Swimsuits.

One top tip from Jan and Cyndy: consider buying swimwear for your next trip now, while the sales are on, and you can make big savings. Generally, you can save on swimwear in the sales because brands hate to carry styles over to next summer. If you like really cutting-edge swimwear, this may not work for you, but if – like Cyndy and Jan – you consider the cut, quality and colour more important than details such as round or triangular keyhole cut-outs, then look for swimwear in the sales and save…
