Improved dental techniques and revolutionary dental cosmetic procedures, mean that a great smile can be almost anyone’s, if they want it – and, to be honest – can afford to pay for it.
For those lucky enough to have even, fairly white teeth, the key focus needs to be on maintenance and dental hygiene, with at least six-monthly visits to a hygienist as well as regular check-ups. Even those who take great care of their teeth can suffer from gum recession once they reach their 50s, but there are highly qualified technicians who can counter those problems.
Dr Keith Cohen of Dentexcel, in Harley Street and The City, explains that veneers and crowns are available to correct defects such as spacing between teeth, and discoloured or crooked teeth. Many adults are also having invisible braces, such as Invisalign, to straighten teeth. But this is a long-term project, and can take up to two years to complete.
The simplest and quickest treatment for improving teeth that are in generally good condition, suggests Dr Cohen, is a cleaning to remove surface stains to improve appearance and confidence.
Teeth whitening can be carried out over a period of around a month if it is done at home with bleaching trays, or in a single visit to a surgery.
Nowadays implants or mini-implants have revolutionised the wearing of dentures. For those who have lost many teeth, and have the determination and the cash, there are implants, bone grafting and fixed bridges.
