Every autumn, flannels, plaids and checks work their way out of the summer woodwork ready for cosy style; but this year the catwalks were simply awash with the geometric print; and we love it!
This year, The Wedding meant the royals are on trend like never before, bounding British checks and trad tweeds onto the scene. Clashing prints and bright yellows showed their face on the catwalks, but as the women we are now, we’re less Clueless and more class with subtle checks and tartans ready for work and play. Stylish checks work for all ages and styles, so we’re just sure you’ll find the perfect piece for your wardrobe this season, thus we’ve chosen 5 key pieces to help you navigate through a sea of patterns to take you through the last of autumn and into chic winter style.
The Pencil Skirt
Wrap skirts have been an essential item on both the high street and the catwalk, so we searched for the perfect skirt for ladies over 50. This Next number ticked all our style boxes with its feminine silhouette and vintage styling, whilst the just-below-the-knee style covers the perfect amount of leg. For work, we’d pair this with a fabulous rust or camel coloured shirt, and tone this down with a cosy turtle neck for the weekend.
The Trouser Suit
Power suits were another key piece on the fashion catwalks, and we think their effortless style looks just gorgeous on the older lady. Paul Smith’s black and white double-breasted suit comes in a simple yet stylish Prince of Wales check ideal for work. The double-breasted jacket is cut into a short style that won’t overpower your figure, and when buttoned up frames your waist. The slim-cut suit trousers would look fabulous with your favourite court shoes or comfortable loafers alike. Wear this outfit with a pastel shirt to add a touch of femininity, or stay warm for winter with a cream roll neck.
The Shift Dress
Check designs pair perfectly with retro styles, so this Wallis shift dress entwines a modern geometric print with 60s shapes and details with ease. Here at SoSensational, we love a long sleeve dress, and the simple button detailing adds a sophisticated touch to a classy number. Plus, Shift dresses cover up any lumps and bumps, and flatter almost every figure making this piece a wardrobe essential. Pair this with tights and your favourite heels for work, or dress it up with some elegant jewellery for your next dinner date.
The Trench Coat
Check coats never go out of style, so this season’s heritage check fits perfectly with a versatile design. Longer length coats look just fabulous with trousers, dresses and skirts alike, so it’s so easy to work this Phase Eight piece with your workwear, weekend wear and even during the evening. This fitted style features a matching belt to accentuate the waist, or leave the jacket open for some chic workwear style. This monochrome style is complete with simple black buttons, so would look stunning over a simple white shirt and black trouser or skirt combo.
The Knitted Scarf
If you don’t think you could commit to an outfit full of check, why not choose a cosy scarf to complete your look instead? This Unmade Lucinde scarf from John Lewis provides just enough colourful check to take even the dreariest of outfits from zero to hero. Wrap up warm in the luxuriously soft knit, or pop this over simple workwear to add an array of autumnal hues to a versatile outfit.
What do you think to this season’s it trend, checks? We’d love to hear about your favourite autumnal pieces!
