Here are the season’s best grown-up sandals. That is, the best and most beautiful and on-trend sandals for grown up women.
The best flat sandals, the best heeled sandals and the best wedge & platform sandals, so that you can find fabulous sandals that work with your entire summer wardrobe of dresses and skirts, trousers and jeans and swim- and beachwear. And because you may also have some black-tie events on your calendar, there are also divine sandals (heeled and flat) that are perfectly appropriate for partywear and weddings.
STYLE TIPS
- The first prerequisite for sensational sandals is pretty toes, so do take a look at this blog by our beauty guru Jocelyn Bailey.
- Do consider that ankle straps can make legs appear shorter, so either avoid them (which is very difficult for S/S16 as they are a key style element) or if you can’t avoid them try to keep them narrow and not too visible . So, for making legs appear longer and thinner, narrow ankle straps in tan or gold are good; bold straps in black or emerald green not good.
- If you are not comfortable in heels, but feel you want extra height, do keep in mind that wedge and platform sandals provide height but with less pain than high heels. Chunky, block heels, which are also very strong this season, are, of course, also easier on the feet than stilettos.
- Platform sandals work really well with wide-leg trousers and the whole 70s vibe.
- Do keep in mind that neutral colours, such as tan will work with many more items in your wardrobe. Jan believes that the more types of sandals you own (rather than the more colours), the better they will work with all your different outfits.
- Also keep in mind there are city sandals and beach sandals. As a general rule, leather or suede makes them more appropriate for working days or desk-to-dinner, while espadrilles or any sandals with raffia are generally better for beach or resort wear. Some, like the red leather Hobbs pair (above), work well for both. Sandals which are flat and backless are probably best kept for the beach or holiday wear.
