How do you feel when you are unwittingly reminded that you’re a getting a little older? For Cyndy, it reminded her how she felt the first time a communication from Saga arrived – and that wasn’t good!
On Thursday, booted and suited and on her way to a meeting in London, Cyndy had a dilemma. She got on the tube and as the doors shut, a man got up and offered her his seat. Two thoughts went through Cyndy’s head. “What a nice man”, was instantly followed by “I must look older than I thought”!
The first time a young man stood up for Cyndy, she’d just turned 65 and had not long returned from a week’s trekking in the desert. She felt very fit and well able to stand so refused his offer. Besides, she didn’t feel old. But the crestfallen look on his face was enough to make her very sorry she hadn’t taken the offered seat. The young man looked very embarrassed and has probably never offered his seat to anyone since!
By sheer coincidence, Cyndy’s husband was also on a tube journey on Thursday, and in a carriage full of school children, not one of them stood up for him. He wanted to be offered a seat, Cyndy didn’t. ( Is it a gender thing, she wondered, how one feels about age?)
Anyway, on Thursday, Cyndy’s decision was easy. She smiled gratefully and took the proffered seat. She did feel better though when she discovered that the man was getting off at the very next stop!!
Have you been offered a seat on the train? Do tell us how you felt…

Don’t know what I would feel. I am disabled though mobile so use a walking stick so usually someone moves for me. I would probably be rather peeved as I am Saga club age if offered a seat and I was able bodies
Thank you so much for your comment. I was talking about this at the weekend to a male friend of mine who says he always offers his seat to a pregnant woman, but his offer is sometimes refused, and in the past, that has made him feel uncomfortable. So now, instead of asking the question “Would you like my seat?” he says “Here, take my seat” and they do!
It good to know that people do offer you a seat as they see you use a stick. I’m now going to look on being offered a seat, as an opportunity to give other people the opportunity to do a good deed! All the best Cyndy
