Velvet, as we expect you have noticed, is having a moment.
With its decidedly 70s vibe, this is hardly a surprise, as the 1970s is one of the eras that has been massively inspirational to designers over the past half decade or so with many of our current fashion favourites reworked versions of what we wore in the 1970s or perhaps what we recall our mother wearing.
Well now it is the turn of velvet to have its big comeback. We love its softness, its sensuous, sumptuous, smooth texture and how the slight sheen on its surface makes our skin glow, especially in low lighting – which is why it’s always so popular after dark.
For the new season it is, of course, turning up for evening wear but also for daywear, too. And also for accessories, so if you just want a touch of velvet, you could carry a velvet bag or grab some velvet boots or shoes.
Velvet has changed since the 1970s – and not just in terms of cuts and styles. Fabric technology means that often it is washable; often it is stretchy and it is available in stunning prints and colours.
And while we’re talking textured fabric, we mustn’t forget cord. Corduroy (despite its overtones of history profs and science teachers), is also heading this way for autumn.
And velvet doesn’t have to be ladylike – it can look edgy when styled with chunky boots or brogues.
