In 2008 when Helen Mirren took to the beach at the age of 63 in a bright red bikini it created a social buzz and now in 2015 the media is giving a great big nod to the affectionately named ‘gran bod’.
Here at SoSensational we couldn’t be happier about the positive press surrounding a physique that is healthy, shapely and completely attainable for women over 50.
Elle Macpherson at 51 has an incredible body, and yes whilst her super model status and naturally great genes have helped maintain her figure, it has to be said either way, she looks amazing. Helen Mirren last week was once again flying the flag for healthy attainable figures, and looked stunning at age 69 in a lilac one piece. Lorraine Kelly happily wore a bikini on live TV this week. “I’ve got a scar on my leg and a mum tum but I am fine with that,” she told viewers. “I wouldn’t have been able to do it a couple of years ago.”
So why are women over 50 finding a new confidence in their bodies or continuing to flaunt a confidence they already had?
Recent data shows that women over the age of 50 are more confident about their bodies than ever, with 1 in 3 women saying they will wear a bikini this summer. These changes in attitude could be attributed to a healthier body image being portrayed and supported by the media and celebrities as mentioned above. We also have to consider that the design and structure of bikinis means that they cater more for the women over 50 and the swimsuit has had a major revival across all demographics. Whatever the reason for this confidence, we whole heartedly support it!
Do comment and let us know what you think about ‘gran bods’ and bikinis. Do you still wear a bikini?
