We thought we would give you the low-down on some of our fashion brands and why we chose them for SoSensational. We expect that many of you look at some of the names on our brands list LINK TO B&B FASHION, shake your head and wonder what they could possibly have to suit you as an older woman. We are not including Debenhams or M&S here, as we know that you know that both of them have lots of gorgeous, on-trend and age-appropriate clothes. The same is true of Jacques Vert, Laura Ashley, Boden, Joseph, Hugo Boss and Hobbs.
No, the brands we are referring to here are the High Street and budget brands which you have been assuming have nothing to offer you. This is partly because they seem to have always directed their marketing at a younger age group; partly because they use very young (and generally very thin) models on their websites; and probably because like Jan and Cyndy, you shopped with these brands when you were younger and assumed they were not interested in you now that you are a woman over 50.
But SoSensational’s main raison d’etre is to guide you to sensational, on-trend and yet age-appropriate clothing at fashion brands which you may not have thought were for you. These brands include Coast, Reiss, New Look, F&F, Dorothy Perkins, River Island, Ted Baker and Yumi. The other reason we exist, by the way, is to help you style your clothing successfully, as we know some of you feel you have lost confidence in your fashion choices and how to style them.
To illustrate our point, we are going to tell you a story – actually, 2 stories: a few years ago, Jan happened to be walking through her local Tesco when she spotted a Birkin-style bag by F&F in muted gold. It cost about £10.99 and Jan tucked it into her trolley alongside the salads. The bag was a huge success; Jan wore it a lot and it got many compliments with no-one ever guessing it came from Tesco. The second story concerns a friend of Cyndy and Jan, who does not need to look at price tags when she shops; she was wearing a jacket that looked stunning on her. Cyndy and Jan complimented her on it expecting her to say it was by a big designer name. But no, it came from River Island. So, there are great clothes and accessories out there for you, even if you are a woman who has designer taste and a High Street budget.
There are a couple of additional lessons to be learned here: to develop an eye for great styling (irrespective of the cost); and, when buying at the cheaper end of the market, to consider buying a size up, as lower-priced goods are often cut skimpily and if a garment is too tight it will look cheaper as well as less stylish.
Of course, this is where our styling advice and our editing work the magic, as we help you to find the gems for yourself. Because we have done the hard work; we have assessed the strengths and weaknesses of the brands, so we know what to showcase for you as an older woman, so that you can find the perfect pieces every time.
