Interviewed in the Sunday Times Culture section, in connection with her latest film, Eye In The Sky, due for UK release on April 15th, Dame Helen Mirren, 70, is described by interviewer Bryan Appleyard, as “the perfect glam role model for grannies everywhere.”
Mirren responds: “There should be a new word for that .”
Well, Dame Helen, we have news for you: there is a new word for that. It is GLOW (Glamorous Older Woman). GLOW and GLOWS (Glamorous Older Women Spender) are the terms coined by us, the fashion website SoSensational.co.uk, to describe our demographic of fashion-forward, glam, 50-plus women.
“I am becoming aware of the fact that there are a lot of women to whom I am a beacon of hope. It’s fantastic — yeah, we’re here and we’re … relevant, it’s OK,” says Dame Helen.
So that’s you, and us (Jan and Cyndy, co-founders of SoSensational), Dame Helen, all fighting the good fight to encourage the idea that women over 50 have not fallen off the planet or become invisible….
Interviewed in the Four Seasons, Beverly Hills, Mirren is reported to be wearing “a slinky knee-length purple dress …. Her hair is silky and silvery, and she wears a good deal less make-up than in the L’Oréal ads.”
Other GLOWS include Jerry Hall, Twiggy, Meryl Streep, Nigella Lawson and American ex-model Christie Brinkley.
But you don’t have to be a celebrity to be a GLOW. Non-celebrity GLOWs include a former probation officer from Kettering, Northants; a chocolate-seller from North London and a retired midwife from the Ribble Valley. They are all GLOWS, too.. Candice Rice from Kettering is a retired probation officer, Glasgow-born Hilda Silver from North London sells high-end chocolate while Glenys Gallagher from the tiny Lancashire village of Ribchester, is a former midwife. All three women were chosen to star in SoSensational videos, designed to bring GLOWS to life. SoSensational’s series of short fashion videos demonstrate how the right style advice “can make the older woman look and feel amazing and can transform every older woman into a GLOW, not just the celebrities,” explains SoSensational co-founder Jan.
Co-founder Cyndy, observes: “Women in the UK aged between 50 and 69 buy more designer fashion and luxury goods than any other age group. The fashion industry should not be ignoring these fabulous ladies, yet they do”. So we show older women, our GLOWS where to find clothes that work for them without wearing out their shoes trawling the high street or wearing out their eyes having to look at 30 different websites.”
Jan said: “We wanted to give our site visitors and all stylish older women a name which captures who and what they are, rather than the pre-conceived notions of the 20- and 30-somethings who work in media.
“Cyndy and I certainly do not like being called Silver Surfers or, even worse, Woofs (well-off older folk), and we guessed others don’t like those names either. So we thought we would come up with another, more appealing name. Hence GLOWS.”
“These ladies are clever, sophisticated shoppers and at SoSensational we work hard to identify clothing and trends that will flatter, inspire and empower them.
Are you a GLOW? Are any of your friends GLOWS? Is your mum a GLOW? If you are a GLOW or you know a GLOW, just let us know who you would suggest. And do share your thoughts on Facebook and Twitter…
