Are you a bit of a pear (or even a lot of a pear)? If so, here’s how to make those hips appear slimmer.
By the way, medically, there’s good news for pears: providing we are not carrying too much excess weight, being a bit pear-shaped is the best shape to be as a woman in terms of health because carrying a bit of weight on the hips and bottom is preferable to carrying fat round one’s waist and middle.
So, here are a few of the clever styling tricks and fixes if you are a pear-shape to make your hips look narrower.
We are certainly not suggesting that every pear-shaped woman should shroud herself in black. Oh no. However, darker colours and matte fabrics are more slimming – that does not mean abandoning colour altogether, it just means considering wearing colour in a slightly different way.
If you are a bit of a pear, the simplest fix is to wear a longer-line top or blouse/shirt (we’ll get to colours for tops in a moment) over trousers, jeans or jeggings in a dark’ish shade (ideally not in a shiny fabric).
If you are slim at the top with a small bust, choose your longer-line top in any colour that appeals to you.
However, if you are fuller in the bust and wish to look more streamlined, choose your longer-line top in a darker colour. Try to ensure that your top or blouse does not finish at your widest part. If you wish to add colour, you can do so via bold, paint-box-bright accessories such as jewellery, bags and scarves. But not shoes, as you want shoes in a darker colour to blend with your trousers, jeans or jeggings.
If you choose a longer jacket – i.e a blazer – a darker colour is again more slimming (See How To Style It #1, above). However, if you are wearing a darker coloured long top over a matching, darker-coloured bottom half, the darker pieces form a single colour-block from neckline to ankle, so a cropped jacket, worn open – even in a bright shade – will work well, look very on-trend and not add inches (See How To Style It #2, above)!
