You fashion-savvy women already know that Print Trousers are HUGE this autumn/winter. That’s not to say, the trousers themselves are huge, though some are quite voluminous.
What we mean is, they are seriously on-trend, coming through as a conflation of two major trends: The 1970s and Print, which has been having a moment (quite a big moment as it turns out) since 2012, with no sign of us giving print up…
The really clever thing about Print Trousers is that because it is all about the print itself, there are pairs out there in loads of different shapes and cuts. So you can choose a pair in the shape that works best for your body shape.
For women who feel they are a little bit of a pear shape, the other clever thing is because there is a pattern/print, you don’t finish up with a large expanse of plain fabric. And print and pattern are also good for camouflaging bumps or bulges.
There are skinny Print Trousers, straight-leg Print Trousers, baggy Print Trousers and wide-leg Print Trousers (AKA palazzos).
As with all trousers, not all wide-leg/baggy Print Trousers will work even if that is your best shape, as it will depend where any gathering or pleating is placed. If you want to slim your hips, avoid gathers or pleats immediately below the waistband, and if your trousers have pockets at the sides, stitch them up so (a) they don’t gape, adding inches to your silhouette and (b) you are not tempted to put tissues in them, adding even more inches to your silhouette.
The key to working this trend is to team a pretty print pair of trousers with a plain top or fine knit that picks up one of the colours in the print.
A biker jacket looks especially good over the top of Print Trousers as the juxtaposition of tough-pretty is a very enduring, contemporary look. Your top/knit could be short, finishing at the waist, or you could layer a biker jacket over a very long top. Alternatively, a plain blazer in a neutral or that also picks up one of the colours in the print looks very on-trend, too, worn over a plain top and Print Trousers.
But whatever top/jacket you choose, if you wish to minimise your hips, ensure that your top half does not finish at your widest part – it should be several inches above your widest part or several inches below.
