You just want your hair cut. Or if you are like Jan and Cyndy, you want your colour done or you just want your regular blow-dry….
But a trip to the hair salon often means a chat-a-thon with the stylist. If you are a regular in the salon (i.e if you go most weeks) you also get the “What are you doing tonight?” routine from the stylist and the junior who shampoos… If you are a client who goes just for cut and colour (i.e every few months or so) you can expect to be asked if you are going away/going on holiday. Either way, it can be mildly annoying and exhausting if the conversation is expected to continue for the entire duration of the cut, blow-dry or colour application… Generally, you will be left in peace while the colour “takes”.
With that in mind, the Bauhaus Salons in Cardiff now offer the option of booking an appointment guaranteed free of chit-chat. The South Wales business has installed a Quiet Chair at each of its two locations
Owner, Scott Miller explained: “Most of our clients, especially our regulars, enjoy a good chat. But we knew of people who had been put off booking an appointment because they were worried about the expectation of conversation.”
According to a press release issued by the salon, the idea for a “quiet chair” was sparked after some clients said they knew of people who “struggled with” or “didn’t like small talk”.
Hairdresser chit-chat is widely derided, and even feared by those who dislike making small talk or get anxious about it. In Jan’s case her long-time dislike of making small talk has now combined with her difficulty in talking following her surgery to make salon visits fairly silent. Jan explains: “The lovely Chloe, at Mia in Friern Barnet Road, London N11, has been keeping my hair looking really good through all of my health issues. She has to touch my skull, with its bumps and craters, and is unerringly kind, gentle and quiet – she totally gets that I’m not good at chatting these days; not that I was ever big on small talk. But we do have a shared passion for vintage clothing and statement necklaces, which usually gave us subjects to chat about.”
Are you a salon chair chatterbox, or do you believe silence is golden? Does visiting the hair salon make you feel anxious or are you happy to spill your innermost secrets to your stylist? Do let us know how you feel about going to get your hair done…
