We can’t believe it either but it is Sale-time again. It is very good news for us as consumers, but bad news, in our view, for the industry. But, we can all clean up with great bargains to buy in the Sales and love forever.
At SoSensational we have a set of Rules for Sale Shopping. If you ask us nicely, we’ll share them with you.
Rule 1: Only buy it in the Sale if you would have bought it at full price. In other words if you spot a raspberry-pink cashmere jumpsuit reduced to half price but hate yourself in pink and overheat in cashmere, do not be tempted!
Rule 2: Only buy it in the Sale if it is something that you really need
Rule 3: Only buy it in the Sale if it is something that you really love
Rules 4 to 10 are: Only buy it in the Sale if you would have bought it at full price; only buy it in the Sale if it is something that you really need or if it is something that you really love.
Ok, enough with the rules, now here are some suggestions for Sale items that are truly worth investing in for the rest of this summer and future summers. Because while we and every publication on the planet are constantly urging you to buy new stuff, the reality is that certain clothes go on for summer after summer, just needing a little update via on-trend styling and accessories.
So, here’s what to look for in the Sales to extend your wardrobe for next summer and, indeed, for lots of future summers (and sometimes for autumn and winter, too).
White always looks fabulous in the summer so stock up on white; especially on white shirts which can also be called into service in winter tucked beneath a blazer; white tops, and white trousers. White jeans are having a moment and will be around for next summer, too, so they are a worthwhile investment.
Linen always looks stunning in summer, so classic pieces in linen, to which you can add sassy and on-trend bag and shoes, are another brilliant wardrobe investment. In particular it is worth truffling out wide-leg linen trousers (which never go out of fashion), and tailored linen blazers.
Palazzos are a great piece for summer and, in fact, for all year round. If you can find a pair in a basic shade such as black or navy, you will be able to rock them for black-tie events for years to come.
Jeans and jeggings are wardrobe staples and great foundation pieces, so buy them while they are discounted.
Anything “anonymous”; that is anything (dress, top, knit, pair of shoes) ideally in a good quality fabric, that is not instantly recognisable as being of the season or instantly recognisable because it has, say, lime and fuchsia stripes – no matter who the designer was (in other words avoid items that are sometimes described as “Once seen, never forgotten”).
And here’s what to shop for in the Sales to get ahead of the game for autumn/winter 16/17:
Midi skirts are trending right now and are not going away any time soon. Buy at least one, ideally in a dark colour, in the sale to wear right now with a Bardot top. When autumn arrives you can style it with a blazer or a biker and be perfectly on trend for the new season.
Open-toe shoe-boots are definitely having a moment; buy them now for next summer and also for the upcoming autumn season.
Arm candy changes every season, but an oversized bag in a bright colour or a useful neutral will look terrific for several seasons ahead, so dive in and buy one while prices are discounted.
One other tip: if you see a perfect basic, such as a white shirt, a white vest or a white tee, or even a bra, buy two (or even three if it’s a real bargain) because we all know what happens to whites that get washed often!
Do you like sale shopping? What will you be buying?
